P.Barclay CLRC1 SCT HEX PRR (14-4-05) Design and qualification of fittings and filters l Background comments: »Space and assembly constraints prevent us from using ‘industry-standard’ fluid fittings, with a few exceptions (outer heater connections) »Some fittings also need to provide electrical isolation; this is done with a PEEK washer »Space is extremely tight and spanner clearance is marginal in some cases. However, special spanners have been made and tried successfully »Established qualification regime has been followed »Detailed design of fittings covered in other talks

P.Barclay CLRC2 SCT HEX PRR (14-4-05) Schematic Of End-cap HEX Schematic Of Barrel HEX ECcap3 ECex1 Bheat1 BEX1 ECheat1 Location of connector types

P.Barclay CLRC3 SCT HEX PRR (14-4-05) l Outline of qualification procedure, see attached note for detail: »He vacuum leak check »25 Bar proof pressure test »4 Bar He pressure test »He leak check of above at 0degC »1 Bar pressurised leak check at –35degC »He vacuum leak check »50 thermal cycles between –35 and +20degC »50 pressure cycles to 2 Bar »He vacuum leak check »4 Bar He pressure test »4 Bar pressurised He leak check at 0degC »1 Bar pressurised He leak check at –35degC »He vacuum leak check l Electrical isolation checked with DMM l Full detailed procedure in document (attached to agenda) l Leak rate spec is better than 10E-07 mBar.litre/sec

P.Barclay CLRC4 SCT HEX PRR (14-4-05) Qualified connector types: ECcap3 ECex1 Bheat1 BEX1 Ten of each assembly tested at RAL

P.Barclay CLRC5 SCT HEX PRR (14-4-05) l All four assemblies are qualified now. We still have to do the Echeat1 connector, but are very close: »Helicoflex-based seal, housings needed orbital welding by local company, hence delay »All other parts are at RAL, assembly for qualification is going ahead at time of writing. Hopefully qualified by time of review »We already made a trial assembly and found that extracting the male housing is difficult – maybe need design change to flange, should not affect qualification l Note about the filters: »Based on known soldered joint techniques, so no qualification required. Richard has tested flow characteristics - no significant impedance
