4 30 Million Word Gap The Early Catastrophe – The 30 Million Word Gap by Age 3 Betty Hart and Todd R. Risley conducted a study in an effort to intervene early to forestall the terrible effects poverty was having on children’s academic growth. (American Educator, Spring 2003)

5 30 Million Word Gap The study included 42 families and when completed included 2 ½ years or more of sequential monthly hour-long observations. Socioeconomic Breakdown of the families: 13 Upper SES 10 Middle SES 13 Lower SES 6 Welfare SES (American Educator, Spring 2003)

6 30 Million Word Gap Findings: 86-98% of the words recorded in each child’s vocabulary consisted of words also recorded in their parents’ vocabularies. (American Educator, Spring 2003)

7 30 Million Word Gap Findings: 3 year old children from the families on welfare not only had smaller vocabularies than did children of the same age in professional families, but they were also adding words more slowly. (American Educator, Spring 2003)

8 30 Million Word Gap Findings: In four years, an average child in a professional family would accumulate experience with almost 45 million words, an average child in a working-class family 26 million words, and an average child in a welfare family 13 million words. Even though research points to common elements of purposeful vocabulary instruction, recent NAEP results for vocabulary reveal that there was no significant change in vocabulary scores for 4th- and 8th-grade students from 2009 to 2011. In short, we still have a long way to go to realize marked vocabulary growth.NAEP

With the increased emphasis on nonfiction and informational text as part of the Common Core ELA & Literacy Standards, vocabulary instruction will be key to supporting student success with these texts.
