ASSIGNMENT 3 - NETWORKING COMPONENTS BY JONATHAN MESA

COMPONENT -HUB This device sends data from one computer to all other computers on the Network. It’s a low- cost, low-function machine that usually operates at Layer 1of the OSI model and ties together the computers attached to it through multiple(twisted pair or optical) ports. It acts as a repeater for a signal passed from, say, port 1 (through the repeater) to port 2. For Ethernet hubs, it participates in the collision detection operations, which can affect response time and throughput. In addition, the need for hubs to detect collisions restricts the size of the Network and the number of hubs that can be installed. Hubs are commonly used to connect segments of a LAN PRICE : $14.99 - $299.00

COMPONENT -SWITCH A switch is a telecommunication device that receives a message from any device connected to it and then transmits the message only to the device for which the message was meant. This makes the switch a more intelligent device than a hub (which receives a message and then transmits it to all the other devices on its network). The network switch plays an integral part in most modern Ethernet local area networks (LANs). Mid-to-large sized LANs contain a number of linked managed switches. Price : $50.00 - $500.00

COMPONENT - ROUTER A router is a device that forwards data packets between computer networks, creating an overlay internetwork. A router is connected to two or more data lines from different networks. When a data packet comes in one of the lines, the router reads the address information in the packet to determine its ultimate destination. The most familiar type of routers are home and small office routers that simply pass data, such as web pages, email, IM, and videos between the home computers and the Internet. Price: $29.99 - $679.00

COMPONENT - BRIDGE Network bridging describes the action taken by network equipment to allow two or more communication networks, or two or more network segments, to create an aggregate network. Bridging is distinct from routing which allows the networks to communicate independently as separate networks. Price : $20.00 - $450.00

COMPONENT - GATEWAY A network gateway is an internetworking system capable of joining together two networks that use different base protocols. A network gateway can be implemented completely in software, completely in hardware, or as a combination of both. Depending on the types of protocols they support, network gateways can operate at any level of the OSI model. Price : $120.00 - $2500

COMPONENT - FIREWALL A firewall is software or hardware that checks information coming from the Internet or a network, and then either blocks it or allows it to pass through to your computer, depending on your firewall settings. Firewalls are commonly used in enterprise networks. Price : $29.00 - $1200

COMPONENT – WIRELESS AP Wireless access points (APs or WAPs) are specially configured nodes on wireless local area networks (WLANs). Access points act as a central transmitter and receiver of WLAN radio signals. Access points used in home or small business networks are generally small, dedicated hardware devices featuring a built-in network adapter, antenna, and radio transmitter. Access points support Wi-Fi wireless communication standards. Price: $39.95 – $395.00
