Basic Parts of a Network for beginners

Network Interface Cards A network interface card (NIC) is a circuit board or card that is installed in a computer so that it can be connected to a network. A network interface card provides the computer with a dedicated, full-time connection to a network.

Modems A combined device for modulation and demodulation, for example, between the digital data of a computer and the analog signal of a telephone line.

Hubs A common connection point for devices in a network. Hubs are commonly used to connect segments of a LAN. A hub contains multiple ports. When a packet arrives at one port, it is copied to the other ports so that all segments of the LAN can see all packets.

Switches A switch is a device used on a computer network to physically connect devices together. Multiple cables can be connected to a switch to enable networked devices to communicate with each other.

Wireless Access Point In computer networking, a wireless access point (AP) is a device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network using Wi-Fi, or related standards. The AP usually connects to a router (via a wired network) as a standalone device, but it can also be an integral component of the router itself.

Bridges A device used to connect two separate Ethernet networks into one extended Ethernet. Bridges only forward packets between that are destined for the other network. A device used to connect two separate Ethernet networks into one extended Ethernet. Bridges only forward packets between networks that are destined for the other network.

Routers A router is a device that forwards data packets along networks. It is connected to at least two networks, commonly two LANs or WANs or a LAN and its ISP's network. R outers are located at gateways, the places where two or more networks c onnect.

Repeaters A repeater is a network device that is used to regenerate or replicate signals that are weakened or distorted by transmission over long distances and through areas with high levels of electromagnetic interference (EMI).

In telecommunications and computer networks, multiplexing(somet imes contracted to muxing) is a method by which multiple analog message signals or digital data streams are combined into one signal over a shared medium. The aim is to share an expensive resource.
