3 Typical Uses for Performance Plots
100 You have an existing plug flow reactor that is running a second order reaction.in which the rate constant, the starting ( CA0 and FA0) concentrations, and the plug flow reaction volume are know. 1) What conversion is expected from this plug flow reactor? 2) What conversion is expected from a stirred tank if it has same volume as this plug flow reactor? 1a ) Find Damkohler grouping value for this plug flow reactor b) Read intersection of that Damkohler line (dotted line) with the horizontal axis. ( the plug flow line) kCo = 1,000 2a ) Start at plug flow conversion value on horizontal axis go up the Damkohler line until it reaches the N=1 line. b) Look straight down from the N = 1 line until it reaches the horizontal axis and read (1-x) value. c) Convert (1-x) to conversion value for single tank system 10.0 (CA0/FA0)Vst / (CA0/FA0)V pf N= 1 Damkohler grouping value for this reaction N= 2 N= 10 1.0 0.02 (1-XA ) 0.1 0. 2 Single Stirred Tank Performance Expected plug flow Performance

4 Typical Uses for Performance Plots
100 You have an existing plug flow reactor that is running a second order reaction.in which the rate constant, the starting ( CA0 and FA0) concentrations, and the plug flow reaction volume are know. 3) What is the volume of stirred tank if you wish to keep the same conversion as obtained in the plug flow reactor? 4) Use two stirred tanks in series as a replacement for plug flow reactor. What flow can be expected if single stirred tank reactor conversion is maintained? kCo = 1,000 3a ) Start at plug flow conversion value on horizontal axis go straight up until you intersect with N=1 line. b) Look straight across until you reaches the vertical axis and read volume ratio. 4a ) N=2 = [Dk#N=1 /Dk# N=2 ] (VN=2/ VN=1) N=1 b) If VN=2 = 2VN=1 you can solve for N=2 10.0 (CA0/FA0)Vst / (CA0/FA0)V pf (Damkohler Grouping number for N=1) N= 1 (Damkohler Grouping number for N=2) N= 2 N= 10 1.0 0.02 (1-XA ) 0.1 Expected single tank Performance Expected plug flow Performance
