1
The Scientific Method Applied to an Ecological Problem
2
Identify the problem and state it as a question to be solved.
3
Identify factors related to the problem Consider the situation and identify a variable that you believe is most likely to be the cause The hypothesis is a logical solution to the problem
4
All variables except the one being tested for need to be held constant Which variables are held constant in this experiment?
5
A good experiment will manipulate the experimental (independent) variable and allow for observation of the results in the dependent variable
6
Before actually doing the experiment you should predict the results Your prediction should be based on the assumption that the hypothesis is correct
7
The experiment should have a control group for the purpose of comparison. If the only difference between the two groups is one variable, it must be responsible for the difference in results
8
Compare the actual results to the results that you predicted Is this result what you would have expected?
9
A graph allows you to visualize results more easily than raw data Look at the slope of the graphs. Which group had the faster growth rate?
10
If your prediction was correct, your hypothesis should be accepted If your prediction did not match results, reject or modify it Your conclusion should always include a statement that directly answers the problem Why do marsh grasses grow to different heights in different places?
