● Design: Wood chest with a foam top ● Used RFID tags and Arduino Uno ● Total cost: $93.88 ● Key findings: o RFID are very reliable o Bigger sandbox would have been more effective o Simple design, but still entertaining o Improvement on existing game Executive Summary

● 100% of kids who play the game do not get hurt ● Must allow two children to play at the same time ● Able to function for 3+ hours without replacing batteries or connecting to alternative power source ● Parent must be able to reset game in under 15 seconds ● Keys must maintain original shape after being handled by 75+ kids ● 95% of students can win a prize in under 2 minutes ● 80% of students must agree that they thought the game was fun ● The game can be explained to kids in under 5 seconds Design Requirements

Explicit Costs ● 2 cat litter boxes at $1.97 each: $3.94 ● 40 lb bag of All-Purpose Sand: $3.79 ● Spring hinges for prototype: $6.86 ● Spring hinges for final project: $5.00 ● Gold spray paint: $4.99 ● Rustic spray paint: $5.76 ● Servo motor: $8.95 ● RFID shield: $39.95 ● Silver toy keys: $14.64 Total: $93.88 Bill of Materials Implicit Costs ● Arduino Uno: $24.95 donated by Will Cricchi ● Wood, foam, screws: ~$20 donated by Reid Bailey Total: ~$44.95 Total Economic Costs: $138.83

Our final design used: ● Gold keys that contain RFID tags and silver keys that do not ● An Arduino with an RFID shield to detect the gold keys ● A latch (shown below) to unlock the chest ● A servo (connected to the Arduino) to open the latch ● Spring hinges to open the chest when unlocked Final Design

Positive: ● Kids successfully won prizes ● $6.12 Under budget ● No false positives ● Kids enjoyed the game: Kids came back to play again o 2 nd among 2 nd -graders o 1 st among Kindergarteners o 2 nd Overall ● Simple: took ~3.5 seconds to explain the game to kids ● No injuries ● All students won a prize in under 2 minutes Results

Negative: ● Sand got very messy ● Too short ● Failed Power Requirement: didn’t last three hours without replacing batteries o 5 false negatives ● Difficult to carry ● Only one child played at a time ● Paint started to wear off keys Results

Possible improvements: ● One bigger sandbox with more keys o Make game more difficult o Contain sand better-less messy ● Use longer-lasting batteries o Able to last 3+ hours without changing ● Add handles o Make it easier to carry and move ● Make lid of wood o Improve realism of product ● Make the lid open more slowly Results
