2 War in the Pacific Island Hopping- U.S. strategy for war in the pacific Japanese had expanded their empire to the pacific islands U.S. Started a policy of Island Hopping- attack one island at a time until they get to Japan General Douglas MacArthur was in charge.

3 Island Hopping Guadacanal- First land engagement of the pacific. -U.S. will meet Japanese on this island. Iwo Jima- bloodiest pacific battle on Japanese Island -flag raising picture

4 Last years of the war By 1943 Germany was beginning to lose the war. Winston Churchill turned the efforts of the British army to taking out Italy. By June of 1944 Italy had been taken.

5 D-day June 6 th 1944 U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower lands on the Beaches of Normandy with a huge force. Major turning point in the war.

6 End of the war in Europe By March 1945 the U.S. had taken France back. Soviets had begun forcing their way into Germany. Battle of the Bulge- Last effort by the German Army to defend Germany. By January 1945 U.S. had taken most of Germany.

7 End of Hitler January 1945- Hitler moves into a bunker below Berlin. April 1945- Hitler commits suicide. May 7 th 1945- Germany Surrenders (V-E day-victory in Europe

8 End of the War in the Pacific Harry Truman- President of the U.S. after FDR dies. Manhattan project- led by Robert Openheimer, created Atom Bomb Bombed dropped on Hiroshima -3 days after Hiroshima another bomb is dropped on Nagasaki. Japan surrenders

9 Effects of the war V-J day- Victory in Japan Thousands of people experience radiation poisoning from the bombs 17 million people die in battle 20 million civilians lose their lives.
