1 Cameron Tegeler and Lisa Bewley Mr. Hawkins – Period 6

2  The first steamboat was invented in 1787 by John Fitch.  Steamboats were used for delivering over sea goods.  We still use boats of delivering goods, but we also use them for luxury.

3  The first steamboat was invented in 1787 by John Fitch.  He was granted his first US patent for a steam boat on August 26, 1791. That same year was beginning of the era of the steamboat in America.

4  The first steamboat expedition was taken in 1787 by John Finch.  It went a whole 5mph.  To him and his crew, it felt much faster then we would think now.

5  More history needs to go here. Try to get as much as possible. Preferably about ten slides all together of history… (if possible…) thanks!

6  Two famous steamboats include the Titanic and the Queen Mary.  The Titanic is famous for being the largest, most comfortable, and being completely “unsinkable.”  That saying didn’t last long.

7  The Titanic was one of the largest steamships ever build for its time.  It was built in 1912.  Sadly it sink on its Maiden voyage on 14th April 1912.

9  The type engine that was used in steamboats back then was the steam engine.  This was used from James Watt’s design of the steam engine.

11  Steam engines back then were mainly used for transporting goods from one place to another over seas.

12  Today boats are still used for transporting goods from one place to another.  But we also use them for recreational things.

13  Because of the steamboat we have things like cruise ships, fishing boats, submarines, and many other kinds of boats.

14  Boiler- large enclosed metal drum which water heats to create steam  Brig- jail located at the back of the engine that was used in the 1990s  Buckets- large wooden plank attached to the paddlewheel shaft which pushed water away from the boat  Calliope- on steamboat, steam powered pipe organ  Steam boat jobs- captain, deck hand, first mate, fireman, engineer, purser,  Paddlewheel- method of propulsion on a steam boat  Port- left side of any boat  Smokestacks- tall stacks on a steam boat that let smoke  Transport- to carry or move people or cargo place to place  Stern- rear or back end of a boat where paddlewheel is located on the Belle
