Bauhaus Architecture BY: DEREK SALDAÑA

Five features of Bauhaus  Contain flat roofs.  Smooth facade (face of the building).  Colors are usually white, gray, beige, or black.  The frames are steel based.  Most Bauhaus styled buildings have a cubed shape.

The Bauhaus Building  The Bauhaus Building was designed by Walter Gropius. Gropius was the founder and creator of the Bauhaus style of architecture. The building was built in 1925-1926 and operated between 1919 and 1933. The building was a school that taught the art, architecture, and design of the new style of Bauhaus at the time.

The Kornhaus  The Kornhaus was established in 1929-30 on the bank of the Elbe River in Dessau, Germany. It is the only Bauhaus structure built on a waterfront property. The building was designed by Carl Fieger who had worked in the architecture offices of Walter Gropius since 1921. The Kornhaus was built as a restaurant and a pub. It was renovated in 1996 and is one of Dessau’s most attractive places.

Weimar, Germany/ Dessau, Germany  Weimar was the city in which the Bauhaus style was founded by Walter Gropius. The Bauhaus School was originally built here but then was perceived as too liberal. The Bauhaus style was then moved to Dessau, Germany. This was when the style started to grow more popular. The Bauhaus Building was then built there in 1925 and remains today one of the landmarks of modern architecture.

Tel Aviv, Israel  Tel Aviv has more than 4,000 buildings built in the Bauhaus form. Many of the buildings were built during the 1930s because of the rise of Nazis which made many German Jewish architects immigrate to the British Mandate of Palestine. Tel Aviv has more Bauhaus buildings than any other city in the world. Because of the many white Bauhaus buildings, the city is now referred to as the “White City”.

Walter Gropius (1883-1969)  Gropius was a German architect and the founder of Bauhaus architecture. In 1910, designed a wall for a shoe factory. He only designed the façade which were glass curtain walls. This demonstrated the modernism in Gropius’s designs. In 1919, Gropius went on to become the founder of the Bauhaus style. He began to teach others the characteristics of the Bauhaus style. Many architects adopted the style and many buildings were built using the Bauhaus style.

Hannes Meyer (1889-1954)  Walter Gropius appointed Meyer as the head of the Bauhaus architecture department when it was officially established in 1927. Meyer helped grow the style of Bauhaus positively and helped build more designs. Gropius then appointed Meyer to replace him as the Bauhaus school’s director in 1928. Meyer continued with Gropius’ innovations by designing prototypes for serial mass productions and functionalist architecture.
