1 Minorities in the late 1960’s By Wyatt, Shawn, Hatter, and Trevor

2 Why this group emerged Native Americans and Latinos were discriminated against just like the Blacks. When the Blacks got there rights the Native Americans and the Latinos wanted their rights too.

3 Latino Goals Latinos demanded more representation and better treatment. Demanded equal opportunities and a respect for there culture and heritage. Wanted to unionize so they could fight as a group

4 Native American Goals Wanted to have equal chance to be employed Wanted there culture and heritage to be respected Wanted a say, and wanted to choose their own way of life Wanted restoration of land

5 Changes Brought For Latinos Latinos unionize and make the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee (UFWOC) “Brown power” spread over the country for Latinos. Schools taught in Spanish so Latino children could get an education. Bilingual Education Act provided funds for schools to develop bilingual and cultural heritage programs for non-English speaking children

6 Changes Brought for Latinos (cnt) Began organizing politically in a 2 party system. (MAPA) Mexican American Political Association helped elect Los Angles Politician Edward Roybel to the House of Reps.

7 Changes Brought for Native Americans Many young Native Americans wanted change faster so they formed the American Indian Movement (AIM) AIM, as well as other groups actively and sometimes violently confronted the government. Congress Passed Indian Education Act which passed the Indian Self-Determination Act and Education Act. These laws gave tribes greater control over there own affairs and over there children’s education.

8 Changes Brought For Native Americans (cnt) Taos of New Mexico regained there sacred blue lake. Another victory for Native Americans was the education act of 1972. And in 1975 congress passed the Indian self determination and education assistance act.

9 Era of Change These groups represent an era of change because groups no longer have to put up with the way they get treated. Groups can protest to get the rights that they want, and to get the respect they deserve.
