Using the Buffer

Safety Gear Required Safety goggles Hair pulled back No loose items (hoodie strings, headphones, bracelets, scarves, etc.) If you wear an apron, be sure it is tied in the back Before you turn on the buffer, be sure the motor switch is off.

Turning on the Buffer First turn on the switch in the back of the buffer to turn on the fan. Next turn on the motor with the switch in the front.

Hold your piece securely. Always use two hands to hold your project, the rake, or the buffing compound

Hold a small flat piece with the ring clamp.

Hold a long flat piece with a block wrapped in an old Sunshine cloth.

Hold a ring on a wooden ring mandrel Angle the narrow end of the cone inwards Do not use a metal mandrel

Stand close to the buffer and directly in front of the buffing wheel.

Hold your piece in the proper place The buffing wheel spins down in the front Hold your pieces below the middle of the buff Angle your pieces downward This goes for your project, the buffing compound, and the rake

Dress the Buffing Wheel Add tripoli to the buffing wheel Rake out buff to separate fibers of the wheel

Helpful Hints: Don’t touch your piece as soon as you’re done buffing. Friction creates a great deal of heat and you can be burned. If you are getting a buildup of black stuff on the area where you are buffing, you need to press harder. It is normal for it to build up at the margins of the buffing area.

Turning off the buffer First turn off the motorNext turn off the fan

Always stop the wheel with the rake before leaving the buffing area

Quiz Review Q: What two pieces of safety gear are required for using the buffer? A: Safety glasses and hair pulled back Q: Where should your body be when buffing? A: Near the buffer, directly in front of the buffing wheel Q: List two other safety considerations you need to make BEFORE turning on the buffer. A: Remove or tuck in loose clothing, headphones, dangling jewelry, scarves, etc. OR if you wear an apron, tie it in back, OR make sure the motor is switched off.

Q: First turn on the ____ then turn on the ____. A: First turn on the fan then turn on the motor. Q: Where should you hold your project in relation to the center line of the buff? A: Hold your project below the center. Q: How should you angle your project? A: Angle the project downward.

Q: List three ways to hold your project steady. A: Ring clamp for small flat pieces, ring mandrel for rings, wooden block with cloth for long flat pieces Q: Why should you not touch your project as soon as you’re done buffing? A: Your metal will be very hot from the friction. Q: If a bunch of black stuff coats your project, what are you doing wrong? A: You need to press harder when buffing. Q: After you turn off both buffer switches, what do you need to do before walking away from the buffing area? A: Stop the buffing wheel with a rake.

Thank you to the models! Erin would like you to know that the hairy man hands in the pictures were not hers!

Types of Buffing Compounds Tripoli goes on the buffer on the left Tripoli is brownish Tripoli has abrasives that will help remove surface scratches Tripoli will damage stamped patterns Use Tripoli first Red rouge goes on the right Red rouge is reddish Red rouge does not have abrasives to remove surface scratches—it is just a polish Red rouge is less likely to damage stamped patterns Use red rouge last
