Questions What are the different forms of fossil fuels? Subject Area: Ch: 5 Sec: 2 Part 1 “Fossil Fuels” EQ: What are the ways that humans use fossil fuels? May 12, 2015 Agenda 1.Roll 2.Chapter 5 Section 2 Part 1 “Natural Resources” 1.Video: “Fossil Fuels” Come in Quietly and sit at your desk, open to your notes, write the new question, and wait quietly for class to begin.

Fossil Fuels Fossil fuels are nonrenewable energy resources that form in the Earth’s crust over millions of years from the buried remains of once-living organisms. This is the energy resource that humans depend on the most.

Energy Resources Energy resources are natural resources that humans use to produce energy.

Energy Resources All of the energy released from these resources ultimately comes from the Sun.

Fractionation Fossil fuels and other products are separated from petroleum in a process called fractionation.

Liquid Fossil Fuels - Petroleum Petroleum, or crude oil, is an oily mixture of flammable organic compounds from which liquid fossil fuels and other products, such as asphalt, are separated.

Types of Fossil Fuel Types of fossil fuels separated from petroleum are gasoline, jet fuel, kerosene, diesel fuel, and fuel oil.

Gaseous Fossil Fuels – Natural Gas Gaseous fossil fuels are classified as Natural Gas. Most Natural gas is used to heat or generate electricity.

Methane Methane is the main component of natural gas. Other natural gas components, such as propane and butane, can be separated and used by humans.

Vehicles Powered by Natural Gas Vehicles can be powered by natural gas and cause less air pollution than those powered by gasoline.

Solid Fossil Fuels - Coal Coal is a solid fossil fuel formed underground from buried, decomposed plant material. Coal is the only fossil fuel that is a rock. People burned coal for heating and transportation.

People began to use coal less because burning coal often produces large amounts of air pollution and because better energy resources were discovered. Solid Fossil Fuels - Coal

Burning Coal Burning coal can provide energy that can be converted to electricity.

“Fossil Fuels” 1.What did you know? _____________________________________________ 2. What did you learn? _____________________________________________ 3. What do you want to know? _____________________________________________

1.Name two ways humans use natural gas. Response: Two ways humans use natural gas is … 2.What are fossil fuels? Response: Fossil Fuels are … 3.What are some types of fossil fuels? Response: Some types of fossil fuels are … 4.What is solid fossil fuel? Response: Solid fossil fuel is … 11:00

Objectives 1.Classify the different forms of fossil fuels. 2.Determine how fossil fuels form. 3.Identify where fossil fuels are found in the United States. 4.Explain how fossil fuels are obtained. 5.Identify problems with fossil fuels. 6.List ways to deal with fossil-fuel problems Title: Fossil Fuels Standard: 6.c. Students know the utility of energy sources is determined by factors that are involved in converting these sources to useful forms and the consequences of the conversion process.
