Diaphragm = Major muscle of breathing Contracts during inhaling Relaxes during exhaling

3 Inhaling Oxygen enters trachea & inflates lungs Requires energy
Intercostal muscles contract to increase lung capacity; Diaphragm contracts

4 Exhaling Carbon Dioxide is forced out from the lungs Passive
Intercostal muscle relax; Diaphragm relaxes, moves upward & pushes air out Only requires energy when a respiratory disease is present

5 Chest Tube Hollow, flexible tube that acts as a drain Pt. Conditions
Post-op Pneumothorax Fluid in the lung
