Your child will be expected to:  Read and write all different kinds of texts (fiction, nonfiction, science, social studies, etc.)  Compare/contrast different types of text  Read increasingly complex text multiple times for deeper understanding  Discuss and write about texts on a high level

9 How Do I Help My Student Improve Their Writing?  Adults As An Audience  Children love to write for an audience  You should be a critical friend- listen, help, give friendly advice but don’t take over!  Genuine Reasons To Write  Consider the reasons you write daily  Include your child in writing for a purpose  Children Must See The Need for Editing  Writing should be more correct for certain audiences

10 How Do I Help My Student Improve Their Writing?  The Initiative Stays With The Writer  Begin with questions  What do you need help with?  What are you working on?  Read it to me first and let’s see how it sounds.  The Pen Stays In The Writer’s Hand  Focus On One Task At A Time  Have the student circle what they are unsure of  Don’t try to fix all of it

11 Writing Tips For Parents  Use writing you find everyday as a guide  When editing pick one focus at a time  Punctuation  Capital letters  Varying sentence lengths  Keep in mind purpose and audience are more important than grammar, spelling, and punctuation.  Celebrate writing!  Stay positive!
