4 Psychology behind MBPI
Based on the research of Carl Jung Proposed and developed the concepts of: Extroverted and the introverted personality Conscious mind Collective unconscious Believed in five archetypes (states of being): The Body Unification of unconsciousness and consciousness of an individual – YOUR PERSONALITY The Shadow Life instincts such as repressed ideas, weaknesses, desires, instincts, and shortcomings – YOUR DARK SIDE

5 Psychology behind MBPI
The Anima / Animus Represented as the feminine image in the male psyche and the male image in the female psyche Theorized that we sometimes repress our anima / animus depending on the situation – MACHISIMO, SENSITIVITY, TYPE A vs TYPE B PERSONALITY The Persona How we present ourselves to the world (derived from a Latin word that means “mask”) – HOW WE BEHAVE IN DIFFERENT SOCIAL SETTINGS

6 Myers Briggs Personality Index
Developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers Developed during WW2 to help women entering the workforce for the first time in identifying the type of war-time jobs they would be most comfortable and effective. Designed to look at the rational (judging) functions: thinking and feeling As well as the “irrational” (perceiving) functions: sensing and intuition

7 Indicates the Differences
How we focus our attention or get our energy (extraversion vs. introversion) How we perceive or take in information (sensing or intuition) How we prefer to make decision (thinking or feeling) How we orient ourselves to the external world (judgment or perception)

8 ESTJ Account for about 8-12% of the population Extraversion Sensing
Motivated by their interaction with people Enjoy wide range of acquaintances Gain energy in social situations Sensing More concrete than abstract Focus on detail rather than big picture Look immediate rather than future Thinking Value objective criteria above personal preference Give more weight to logic than social considerations Judgment Plan activities and make decisions early Derive control through predictablity

9 INFP Rarer type: Accounts for about 4-5% of the population
Introversion Quiet and reserved Prefer interacting with a few close friends Expend energy in social situations iNtuition Abstract rather than concrete Look at big picture rather than details Look to future rather than now Feeling Value personal considerations Give more weight to social implications than logic Perception Withhold judgment and delay decisions Keep options open

10 US Population Breakdown ISTJ 11-14% ISFJ 9-14% INFJ 1-3% INTJ 2-4%

11 Me: ISTJ Introversion, Sensing, Thinking, Judgment
Characterized as faithful, logical, organized, sensible and well-regulated. Also reserved and serious. Viewed as hard workers who are goal oriented

12 How this relates to the fire service
As leaders and managers, we must recognize our own strengths and weaknesses Sometimes we have to tailor our conversations so that the other person can understand in the way that they think as opposed to how we are presenting the information

13 What now? Embrace your individuality!
There is nothing “wrong” with you – in fact, most of us are a little off for doing this job, right? If there is someone in your life that you do not get along with, could learning about your personality type affect that relationship in the future? Maybe.

14 Assignment #1 Make sure you read the documents about the City of Kaplan Fire Department in the “Assignment” tab. We’ll be working with these for the next 10 weeks MINIMUM two page paper in proper APA format discussing the findings of your inventory and the strengths and weaknesses you knew. Make sure you use at least two outside sources, properly formatted.

15 Next week I will be traveling all week in New Mexico and Nevada for work but should have access to and Internet Please be aware of this if my responses are delayed – I will be flying most of the day Monday and will be in class until Friday.
