3 What is converged infrastructure?
Converged infrastructure systems combine compute, storage, networking, and infrastructure management into an integrated system to provide general purpose, virtualized resource pools for applications, VDI and private clouds VI/OS Servers Storage Network Compute Unified Sys Mgmt and Automation Network Procure & Integrate Legacy Systems Mgmt Virtual Infrastructure & OS Storage Platform Centric (generic workloads) Or Application Centric (complex workloads) Before we get started, it’s important to set a baseline for how we define Converged Infrastructure. Converged infrastructure systems combine compute, storage, networking, and infrastructure management into an integrated system that provides general purpose virtualized resource pools for applications, VDI and private clouds. It’s also important to take a look at how infrastructure solutions are currently built. IT’s focus is also on the infrastructure itself, rather than the applications that ride on top of it, creating a situation where applications are performing poorly or inefficiently. Most large infrastructure solutions today are custom built from multiple vendors, meaning separate server, storage, networking, virtualization, and systems management teams each purchase infrastructure and software that works best for them, with minimal input from other teams. In many of these customers, IT architecture teams have been built to ensure teams are collaborating so that the individual areas can be better integrated when the infrastructure gets rolled out. Despite these team’s best efforts, the result is oftentimes a fragmented and sub-optimized infrastructure. In scenarios where the infrastructure is designed in advance, architecture teams or expensive consultants must gather requirements across the organization, design a solution that meets all the teams’ needs, procure the infrastructure, integrate the infrastructure, and then test/tune it to ensure it works well, resulting in an incredibly slow and inefficient process. In addition to these challenges, the current model is also incredibly inefficient from a solution management perspective. Current organizations, processes, and tools create inefficiencies including: Expensive and highly qualified admin resources are needed for mundane, non-strategic tasks Agility in minimized because of the manual interactions required for cross-domain activities Complexity rules as systems built to work in silos are put together, oftentimes through virtualization, creating technical and organizational havoc Converged infrastructure changes this dynamic, by creating application centric, integrated resource pools that drive efficiency and agility. Convergence: Collapses and automates critical administrative tasks to speed up routine tasks and free up experts for higher order needs. It also replaces silos with policy-based automation, which speeds workload deployments and improve accuracy while minimizing routine tasks Reduce operational costs for virtual infrastructure and underlying hardware These integrated systems also make it easier and faster to roll out new infrastructure: Single source of procurement Single source of support Up and running in less than 2 weeks Lower total cost of ownership Domain Centric SI led: multiple components / vendors Time consuming (Months) Expensive People intensive Single source of procurement Turnkey: up in less than 2 weeks Lower total cost of ownership Single point of support Confidential

Enabling a Simpler IT Operational Model Converged infrastructure collapses and automates critical administrative tasks to speed up routine tasks and free up experts for higher order needs Challenge Solution Storage Server Network Converged Infrastructure Virtual Infrastructure Compute Capacity Network Access Storage Capacity Server Network Task s Challenge: Roadblocks to infrastructure agility & efficiency IT infrastructure operations have always crossed domain boundaries … but virtualization has amplified these interactions. Current tools do not comprehend the changing operational roles in IT Server admins have evolved into virtualization admins but they have to do more with less Expensive & highly qualified administrators doing mundane tasks Domain administrators are being kept away from higher value and more strategic activities Reduced responsiveness due to existing manual processes Time is wasted waiting on resources and people due to cross- domain dependencies Solution: Convergence provides automation to drive efficiency & agility Convergence collapses and automates critical administrative tasks to speed up routine tasks and free up experts for higher order needs. Replace domain silos policy-based automation. Reduce operational costs for virtual infrastructure and underlying hardware Refocus domain admins on higher-value tasks. Speed workload deployments and improve accuracy while minimizing routine tasks Support existing management processes. 5 Competitive choices are:
How is Dell positioned in the market? Converged IT benefits without the tradeoffs Spectrum of IT’s choices for converged solutions Competitive choices are: Dell’s approach is: Inflexible Intuitive Flexible Comprehensive Incomplete or The market for converged solutions has formed over the past few years and offers customers a spectrum of choices. However there are limitations… First, some competitive solutions are inflexible & incomplete Proprietary architectures offered by competitors like Cisco lock customers into an architecture that may be difficult to disaggregate over time; they are built to operate in a single way and may not support all customer needs or integrate with existing management offerings in a clear or simple manner. This architecture is meant to protect lucrative networking revenue streams. Incomplete - lack key elements such as integrated storage or support for physical infrastructures (non-virtual, which still exist in many customer environments). Next there are offerings that are either complex and/or expensive. Complex in that they are hard to implement, integrate, and use, or that require multiple tools that don’t integrate to address key customer requirements. Also expensive, both individually and as more products are needed both the initial costs and ongoing support/maintenance costs (e.g. licensing, training) can add up. Dell is different… First, Dell provides Simple solutions… Simple – Dell has a history of extensively involving customers in tools development allowing us to develop tools that are intuitive to learn and easy to keep using.  Our focus on x86 solutions also allows us to develop product and solutions without competing priorities that oftentimes force development compromises. Flexible - because Dell offers many solutions are interoperable with your existing infrastructure hardware and management investments… Comprehensive – Dell offers comprehensive solutions, complete with servers, storage, networking, and management; all delivered with unified one-call support Dell allows customers to get the benefits of CI without the burdensome tradeoffs. Complex Dell overcomes these limitations Expensive Confidential

Modular Foundation Thunderbolt 800 starts with a modular foundation. This foundation starts with PowerEdge blade servers, available in 1/4, ½ , and full height blades. This bladed infrastructure minimizes the possibility of incorrect cabling of a server to other components, simplifying up front integration, and delivering enhanced system quality downstream. Dell blade infrastructure also provide industry leading power & cooling efficiency, minimizing ongoing operating expenses. Dell is also changing server networking with the PowerEdge M I/O Aggregator, which is designed to simplify blade chassis networking by pushing advanced networking features to the top of rack switch. It is purpose built for a server administrator with simple deployment and management tools. It is capable of handling a converged SAN/LAN fabric, and can facilitate east/west chassis traffic with 10GbE throughput. In addition to the bladed infrastructure and simple IOM, Dell promotes a converged SAN/LAN fabric as a to improve overall system efficiency. Converged fabric is an ideal in the Thunderbolt framework, meaning we also support separate fabrics for those customers requiring this option. Converged Management Orchestrating this underlying foundation is Dell’s Converged Management tool, Skyhawk. Key to Thunderbolt, Skyhawk is an intelligent and intuitive converged infrastructure manager. DSM leverages templates to automate infrastructure set-up, which greatly simplifies and speeds up the process, and also greatly reduces errors associated with manual set-up. The result is better infrastructure quality with fewer configuration errors that can be costly. End to End Experience  Dell takes our modular infrastructure and converged management (Intellectual Property) and packages it in a way that provides an end to end experience for customers. This might mean supplying pre-validated components out of the Dell Thunderbolt Solution Matrix, providing guidance via our reference architectures, or delivering a pre-integrated offering that is optimized, pre-built, and deployed onsite with turnkey services. Each of these models is provided by a single vendor, enabling a single point of accountability.
