2 What are the different types?
Just as in music, or film, there are different genres, or types of photography. These range from the delicate art of fine art photography, to the more hardcore sports photography.

3 Photojournalism Photojournalism is the use of images to tell a news story Has become more and more popular Can be more powerful than the written story Famous Photographer: Margaret Bourke-White ( ), Eddie Adams ( ) won the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Vietnam War

4 Margaret Bourke-White
She began to study photography as a hobby while a very young woman. Margaret Bourke-White is a woman of many firsts. She was a forerunner in the newly emerging field of photojournalism, and was the first female to be hired as such. In 1929 she was the first photographer for Fortune magazine. She was the first female photojournalist for Life magazine, soon after its creation in 1935, and one of her photographs adorned its first cover (November 23, 1936). She was the first female war correspondent and the first to be allowed to work in combat zones during World War II, and one of the first photographers to enter and document the death camps. She made history

6 Eddie Adams Adams was a photojournalist during the Vietnam War.
Adams' close-up portraits and emphasis on intimate storytelling presented a new way to photograph war.  In addition to photographing 13 wars, his images of politics, fashion and show business appeared on countless magazine covers and newspapers around the world.

Advertising Photography is the use of photography to create an image that sells a product by portraying it in an often lavish and sexy form Recently this genre has become more and more sexually suggestive and colorful Famous Photographer: David LaChapelle

15 David LaChapelle David LaChapelle is known internationally for his exceptional talent in combining a unique hyper-realistic artistic images with profound social messages. He has photographed for the covers and articles in Italian Vogue, French Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, and Rolling Stone Magazine, and he has photographed personalities as diverse as Tupac Shakur, Madonna, Eminem, Philip Johnson, Lance Armstrong, Pamela Anderson, Lil’ Kim, Uma Thurman, Elizabeth Taylor, David Beckham, Paris Hilton, Jeff Koons, Hillary Clinton, Muhammad Ali, and Britney Spears, just to name a few. After establishing himself as a fixture in contemporary photography, LaChapelle decided to branch out and direct music videos, live theatrical events, and documentary films.

23 Animal Photography Animal photography is the use of photography to showcase the beauty and danger of animals Animal photography in it’s finest form captures the animal in it’s natural unobserved state Famous Photographer: Nick Brandt

24 Nick Brandt Nick Brandt is famous for his images of East African wildlife. He has produced a large collection of work which represents a powerful expression of the beauty and grandeur of the animal kingdom in this part of the world. His images are very different from the action packed shots of most other wildlife photographers. He is interested in portraying a subtler vision of the life and character of the creatures he photographs.

25 Aerial Photography Aerial photography is the shooting of earth scenes from above while in a plane or helicopter This form of photography captures the natural patterns of the earth and displays them beautifully, often by contrasting the image and manipulating the lighting Famous Photographer: Yann Arthus-Bertrand

26 Yann Arthus-Bertrand French photographer, journalist, reporter and environmentalist. While in Africa, he earned his living as a hot-air balloon pilot. This was when he really discovered the earth from above and the advantages of viewing what he was studying from afar to gain an overall picture of an area and its resources. He discovered his calling: to demonstrate the Earth’s beauty and show the impact of mankind on the Planet.

27 Still Life Photographic representation of the arrangement of inanimate objects Still Life Photography is a way to to capture the essence of objects and reveal their importance to us and to other people Examples of still life are all around us, they can be found within brochures, catalogues, advertising, magazine and book covers and also within fine art galleries Famous Photographer: Edward Weston

28 Edward Weston Still Life Photography gets its roots from the romanticism of traditional painting techniques, illustrating the natural world as it appears in the artist’s mind. Still life photographers transform ordinary scenes into a story by using varieties in texture, color, highlights, and shadows. Traditional still life photography places great emphasis on simplicity.

29 Fine Art Photography Fine art photography overlaps many genres of photography, as it is developed primarily for aesthetics and/or concept rather than function. photographs that are created to fulfill the creative vision of the artist.  Stands in contrast to photojournalistic and commercial genres Does not focus on selling products or services

30 Man Ray & Bill Brandt Fine art photography refers to photographs that are created in accordance with the creative vision of the photographer as artist. Usually seen on the walls of museums and galleries. Man Ray was an American modernist artist who spent most of his career in Paris, he worked with alternative processes and the human figure while focusing on light and shadow. Bill Brandt worked with people of Great Britain to produce a body of photographic works that range from realism to abstraction.

31 Nature Nature photography is an umbrella term incorporating landscape, wildlife, and plant photography. Many nature photographers try to educate people about the beauty of nature, often with the hope that more people will be inspired to help the environment Famous Photographer: Eliot Porter

33 Macro Photography Macrophotography is the capturing of images at a very close range This is a rather new genre due to the fact that highly specialized and expensive equipment is often required This genre is often used to shoot insects, flowers, and other small animals Famous Photographer: M. 34 M. Plonsky M. Plonsky likes to photograph living things.
He thinks that nature is beautiful and he enjoys being able to capture it really close up. Macro photography is perfect for his style of art because he can get close enough to see what we usally can’t with the naked eye.

35 Stock Photography Encompassing virtually all genres of photography
“Stock” refers to rights-managed images supplied to buyers for specific uses as a means to fulfill the needs of creative assignments  Changed how companies do business, in terms of their advertising. Nowadays, it's no longer always necessary to hire a photographer. Thanks to stock photography collections, it's possible to simply buy the individual images one needs for a particular project
