6 The School by Donald Barthelme
And the trees all died. They were orange trees. I don’t know why they died, they just died. Something wrong with the soil possibly or maybe the stuff we got from the nursery wasn’t the best. We complained about it. So we’ve got thirty kids there, each kid had his or her own little tree to plant and we’ve got these thirty dead trees. All these kids looking at these little brown sticks, it was depressing. What tone do you “hear” or “feel” in this writing?

7 A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean
This was the last fish we were ever to see Paul catch. My father and I talked about this moment several times later, and whatever our other feelings, we always felt it fitting that, when we saw him catch his last fish, we never saw the fish but only the artistry of the fisherman. What tone do you “hear” or “feel” in this writing?

8 The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe
It was A LOW, DULL, QUICK SOUND -- MUCH SUCH A SOUND AS A WATCH MAKES WHEN ENVELOPED IN COTTON. I gasped for breath, and yet the officers heard it not. I talked more quickly, more vehemently but the noise steadily increased. I arose and argued about trifles, in a high key and with violent gesticulations; but the noise steadily increased. Why WOULD they not be gone? I paced the floor to and fro with heavy strides, as if excited to fury by the observations of the men, but the noise steadily increased. O God! What COULD I do? I foamed -- I raved -- I swore! I swung the chair upon which I had been sitting, and grated it upon the boards, but the noise arose over all and continually increased. It grew louder -- louder -- louder! What tone do you “hear” or “feel” in this writing?

9 We can analyze tone in all media we read or view (commercials, text messages, books, articles, etc. ). We often use EMOJI’s to express our tone and/or voice, as well. On the next slide you will write and express tone using the R.A.F.T. format.

10 R A F T Role Audience Format Topic
Whose perspective are you writing from? Who are you writing to? What type of writing is it? What are you writing about? You Are the WINNER of a trip of a lifetime! It can be any destination you choose. There is a catch! You are gone forever and can have no contact with your friends or family for the rest of your life. Your audience is your family. You will write a letter. Your topic is saying good-bye forever. After reading the slide, consider how you would respond. What is the tone you would like to express? How will you express this tone; repetition, connotation of word choices, your voice, etc.? You will only have 2 MINUTES to write this letter! GO!

11 Written Conversations
Pass your paper. Read the paper you have received. How did this person express the tone? Decide on the tone they portrayed in their writing. Procedures: Write your initials Read and decide the tone. Create an EMOJI representing that tone. Write the word or phrase that expresses the tone you drew on your EMOJI’s face.

12 Wrap Up Return papers to their owner.
Read what the others wrote about your R.A.F.T. Did they “hear” your tone? Answer this at the bottom of your paper: Did all of the readers analyze your writing for the correct tone? Write Yes and/or No and then explain why and/or why not.
