1 Animals and Their Body Parts
What kinds of body parts help animals seek, find, and eat their food when they are hungry?

2 Animals have body parts that help them seek, find, and eat their food.
Can you think of an animal that uses a body part to help them find food?

3 Do you know what body part is in this picture?
This animal uses its long tongue to find ants to eat. What is the name of this animal?

4 This animal is an anteater
Why is the anteater’s nose and tongue so long?

5 This next animal has to swallow things whole.
Have you ever tried to bite into something that was too big to fit into your mouth? Can humans open their mouths so that an apple could be swallowed whole? Of course not…why? What do you think happens when this snake’s prey is bigger than his mouth?

6 Here is another snake eating
A snake swallows its prey whole. The jaw of the snake can disconnect so that its mouth can stretch to swallow large prey.

8 Did you guess what picture you just saw?
Was it a turtle? Was it a snake? Was it an elephant’s trunk?

9 How does an elephant use its trunk?
Elephants use their trunks to gather food. They use their trunks to suck up water and squirt it into their mouths. What is this elephant doing?

10 What body part do we use to eat with?
How is this chimp like us when eating?

11 Bats are mammals just like us
Bats are mammals just like us. The difference is that a bat can fly and we cannot. How is this bat like the chimp and us when eating?

12 A bat uses echolocation to seek and find its food when flying.
A bat makes high-pitched sounds and then listens for echoes. This tells them where their prey is. Some bats listen for insects. They can catch more than a thousand insects an hour.

13 Roar! What body parts might be important for this lion to seek, find, and eat its food?

14 A giraffe uses its neck to find food high in the leaves.
What do you think the giraffe’s teeth look like? How does a baby giraffe know its mother?

15 Fingerprints on humans are all different
Fingerprints on humans are all different. Each person has a unique set of fingerprints. A giraffe has a unique set of spots or patterns on its body. A baby can tell which giraffe is its mother by looking at the patterns.

16 How does a camel survive in the desert without drinking a lot of water everyday?
A camel really doesn’t store extra water in its hump. Instead they do not sweat, and so they do not have to drink a lot of water. A little bit of water can go along way with a camel.

17 How long can you go without water?
Let’s not find out because it isn’t as long as a camel can go without water.

18 A camel can go a long time without water!
In the hottest part of the desert, during the hottest time of the year, a camel can go for a week without taking a drink. During the cooler winter months it can go for about …

19 SIX MONTHS! YES, can you believe it. If you were a camel and you took your last drink during November, you would just now be taking your next drink. How much would a camel drink. 35 gallons of water…that is like 35 milk jugs.

20 Butterflies fly to and fro…
Butterflies are insects They have long mouth parts that look like hoses. When they do not use them, they can roll them up like a hose. Their mouths can be twice as long as the rest of their bodies.

21 Butterfly’s tongue The butterfly uses its proboscis to suck nectar from flowers just like you would sip through a straw.

22 A fly’s tongue is different from a butterfly’s tongue.
Flies have tongues that are wider at the end and use them to soak up liquids like a sponge. The tip of the fly’s tongue.

23 Yummy!

24 Do birds have teeth? So how do they eat?

25 A bird uses its beak to grab food.
A strong muscle called the gizzard chews up the food for the bird. Sometimes a bird has to eat small stones or gravel to help it grind up its food.

26 Take a look at this fish! A Sea Robin can swim and walk.
It has spines on the side of its body that act like legs. The spines are used as feeler to find food in the sandy bottom of the ocean.

27 Ribbit, Ribbit, Croak, Croak…
A frog’s eyes are on tip of its head so it can see its prey!

28 A frog has a sticky tongue
Frogs use their sticky tongues to catch insects, spiders, worms, and other small animals. Frogs can wait quietly without moving a muscle so they can catch their prey. Watch out fly!

29 Animals use their body parts to seek, find, and eat food.
Tongues, teeth, necks, jaws, ears, eyes, nose, and hands, are all body parts that animals use to find and eat their food when they are hungry. Ribbit, Ribbit That’s all folks!
