WHY WERE POLITICAL PARTIES FORMED IN THE NEW NATION AND WHAT WERE THE MAJOR DIFFERENCES AMONG POLITICAL PARTIES IN THE YEARS ?

BY: MICHAEL NOTEBOOM AND BENNETT HUDDLESTON

POLITICAL PARTIES IN THE NEW NATION WERE FORMED AS A RESULT OF MAJOR DIFFERENCES IN OPINION, DIFFERENT POLITICAL IDEALS, SECTIONALISM, AND DIFFERENT CONSTITUTION INTERPRETATIONS BETWEEN THE POLITICAL PARTIES THAT WERE PRESENT IN THE YEARS BETWEEN

ISSUES Jefferson: envisioned the US continuing as an agrarian society
Hamilton: foresaw the US becoming more urban and reliant on big business Disputes over interpretation of the Constitution, with the D-R's granting the federal government what powers were explicitly stated in the Constitution The Federalists believed that there were implied powers and a looser interpretation. Sectionalism- loyalty to the interests of one's own region or section of the country, rather than to the country as a whole

FORMING OF PARTIES -PARTIES IN THE US TENDED TO EVOLVE SLOWLY OVER TIME -NEITHER OF THE FIRST TWO PRESIDENTS CONSIDERED THEMSELVES TO BE MEMBERS OF ANY PARTY, BUT BOTH OF THEIR POLICIES FAVORED THE FEDERALISTS -EARLY ON, PARTIES WERE CONDEMNED BY MOST LEADERS AS THE CAUSE OF MANY PROBLEMS -OVER THE FIRST COUPLE OF DECADES, POLITICIANS FORMED TOGETHER TO WORK ON ISSUES IN GOVERNMENT -OVER TIME, THESE FORMED INTO PARTIES.   -THE FIRST TWO PARTIES WERE THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICANS AND THE FEDERALISTS

FEDERALISTS -FEDERALISTS TENDED TO SUPPORT A MORE ACTIVE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT -THEY WERE MORE FOCUSED ON DEVELOPING TRADE AND INDUSTRIESTHEY GENERALLY LIKED A LARGER NAVY TO PROTECT MERCHANT VESSELS AND DEVELOPING A BANKING AND TRADE SYSTEMS TO IMPROVE BUSINESSES -THEY ALSO FAVORED CLOSER RELATIONS WITH BRITAIN -THEY DID NOT TRUST FRANCE AFTER THE HORRORS THAT ACCOMPANIED THE FRENCH REVOLUTION AND SAW BRITAIN AS A NATURAL ALLY WITH A SHARED CULTURE -THIS PARTY TENDED TO DO BEST IN THE MID-ATLANTIC AND NEW ENGLAND REGIONS

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICANS
-DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICANS GENERALLY SUPPORTED A SMALL FEDERAL GOVERNMENT THAT WAS VERY LIMITED IN POWER -THEY WANTED A VERY LIMITED MILITARY AND WERE MOSTLY FOCUSED ON MAINTAINING AN AGRARIAN SOCIETY -THEY ALSO FAVORED CLOSER RELATIONS WITH FRANCE, WHO WAS THE CLOSEST U.S. ALLY IN THE REVOLUTION   -THIS PARTY TENDED TO DO BEST IN THE SOUTH AND WEST

IN CONCLUSION . . . In conclusion, without these political parties that George Washington advised us to stay away from, many people would be disappointed with the government. People with different opinions would not be happy with a person leading who has opposite views. We must still believe that even without political parties, politicians would still group themselves into conservatives, liberals, and moderates.
