1 As soon as you come in: Title: Theories of Punishment What is the purpose of punishing people who have done something wrong? (Write three sentences in your book explaining your first thoughts)

2 Learning Outcomes To describe the 4 theories of punishment.
To explain the benefits of each theory and consider some criticisms. To develop an opinion on what is the most effective theory of punishment.

3 Key Terms: Fair: free from bias, dishonesty and injustice Justice: fair and reasonable. Injustice: not fair. Prejudice: an opinion not based on reason or experience. .

4 CRIME

5 CAUSES OF CRIME It is assumed that we are all brought up with the idea or right & wrong. We have a duty & responsibility to be law abiding. Our conscience helps us to judge this. Social reasons; lack in education or qualifications; no positive parental influence; excitement a sense of achievement poor home conditions poor role model boredom, drugs, alcohol or gambling addictions. Psychological reasons; Maybe people are just selfish & greedy, using any method to get money. Violence in TV programs may encourage this. Environmental reasons; Unemployment lead to financial difficulties Peer pressure to join gains involved in knife & gun crime Inadequate or overcrowded housing or a deprived background.

6 CRIME You have a set of cards with crimes written on them.
Rank the crimes in order of seriousness (1 being the most serious/worst)

8 CRIME Consider what punishments you would give for the crimes you rated at 1, 8 and 16. Make sure you can explain your choices. Some examples of punishments: prison sentence, fine, community service, warning, tagging.

Deterrence The idea that punishment will make people afraid of committing crimes. Reform The idea that punishments should try to change criminals so that they will not commit crimes again. Retribution The idea that punishments should make criminals suffer for what they have done wrong. Protection The idea that the purpose of punishment should be to protect the ordinary members of society.

In each box write at least one advantage of each theory and at least one criticism.

13 Work together….. You have 4 minutes to do the following:
prepare a short statement for why you think your theory of punishment is the best (All in your group should have this written in your books). Elect a spokesperson to share this statement with the class. Come up with some questions to ask the other groups and criticisms of their theories.

14 Research Read the information on Elizabeth Fry and answer the questions. Make sure you complete this for homework and hand in your book tomorrow morning
