What’s The SERVE Initiative?
Purpose: to help an FCCLA member plan an effective outreach project for their chapter. Suggestions are given, but nothing is mandatory. You must pick something for whatever is asked, but it does not have to be the example given. *To remember: While using this planner, always apply the directions to YOUR specific situation.* Helpful Hints

The SERVE Initiative aims only to begin the thought process for planning an outreach project- the FCCLA planning process will help with creating a detailed plan of action as well as the implementation of your project. Try looking at all of your options before making a final decision. This erosion represents an economic and ecological crisis in Louisiana. ROR seeks to identify and expedite the implementation of aggressive, large-scale restoration projects to protect this irreplaceable region. Step 5: Create Your Event
Raise awareness Do your research before giving or printing any information. Partnering with an organization can help with finding the essential facts, just remember to promote the cause itself along with the organization. Always give a call to action, so your audience knows how they can help. Ways to raise awareness for a cause: Pamphlets/brochures Flyers Posters Information desks/tables at events Representatives from partner organization speak at event Promo videos Social Media Public Broadcasting (TV, radio, newspaper) Most causes have an awareness day, week, or month. Try planning events around these, such as: Class competitions Surveys Freebie items Games/Simulations Assemblies Statistics/facts on morning announcements NEXT STEP BACK You can raise awareness with almost any project you do.

Raise funds Raising funds can help in a multitude of ways, it doesn’t have to go directly to the people effected by the cause. Money is essential for any organization to prosper, therefore donating to an organization dedicated to your cause can be an easier way to give back. Small events to raise funds: Penny war Cake walk Sports competitions (free throw, home run, quarterback, penalty kick, etc.) Dance competition Bake sale Food sales (burger, pork steak, BBQ, etc.) Large events to raise funds: Dodgeball tournament School/parish dance Pay to Get Out of Class 5K Raffle Yard Sale NEXT STEP For more fundraising ideas visit: BACK

Give service Examples of service projects: Visiting seniors Special Olympics Picking up trash Free babysitting night Soup kitchens Food drives Item collections (depending on the organization/what is needed in your community) Elementary grades field day Volunteering for events Keep in mind that not all causes can benefit from service projects. But they are still essential to many, and most often looked over or forgotten. Many schools, organizations, and communities already have service projects in place. While it’s great to start your own, volunteering for others may be just as effective. NEXT STEP BACK

ALL the Above? Almost every outreach project can have more than one method of support. Some may not include all three, but most projects can include at least two. Try looking at each of the methods of support to decide which would work best for YOUR project. Remember: Not every tip has to be used, pick the ones you think will be most beneficial to your project. LET’S LOOK

Step 6: Bring to your Adviser

Step 7: Finalize Details
After getting your adviser’s approval: Get required permission (ex: principal, city, etc.) Set dates Form a committee (if necessary- small events may only need chapter officers) Assign specific jobs *Set goals* Create a publication plan Publication is KEY to any event (with the exception of service projects.) Where: At your school, around your town, online, local media sources When: a week or two before, a month or two before, or several months before What: Name of event, Date & Time, place, cause, partner organization How: Ask permission to post around school and town, get members to post on social media, contact local media sources to cover the event Local media sources: Newspapers News channels Radio stations Parish websites SOCIAL MEDIA: Before event: Sites to use: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram Post pictures, tweets, and statuses with dates Create hashtags During event: Ask participants to post pictures and videos using hashtags NEXT STEP BACK

Step 8: Contact Organization
How do I contact them? Call or send an . Explain what your chapter is planning, then state clearly what you would like from them. (ex: information about their cause or what they do, a representative to accept a check, possible dates to volunteer/visit, etc.) Helpful Tips: Remember professionalism! Regional Competition Criteria:
Chapters MUST complete a recognition application (marked w/ region) to receive credit. The application must be valid and complete. Chapters may submit ONE application per SERVE Initiative category (four applications possible). The Region with the highest percentage of chapters that complete at least one outreach project using The SERVE Initiative will be recognized at SLC. Question & Answer Q: If you complete more than one outreach project, will it still increase your region’s percentage? A: Yes, your chapter may submit up to four applications to count for your region as long as they are all for different categories. Q: Does my chapter have to fill out an application for the region competition and individual chapter awards separately? A: No, only one application is needed per project. The application will submit the project for evaluation for the individual chapter awards, as well as count towards your region’s percentage by you marking your region on the application.
