1 Mixtures & Solutions Biology

2 Mixtures Combination of substances where components retain their own properties Do not combine chemically Are the following substances or mixtures? water sugar water

3 Solutions Mixture where one substance is dissolved in another & will not settle out Solute - substance that dissolves Solvent - substance it dissolves in Concentration The more solute per solvent, the greater the concentration

4 Solution

5 Importance of Solutions
In organisms, many important substance are dissolved in water Organisms must maintain certain concentrations of solutions Ex. pancreas keeps concentration of sugar within a certain range

6 Scale to measure the strength of an acid or base Measures from 0-14
pH Scale Scale to measure the strength of an acid or base Measures from 0-14 7 is neutral 0-7 is acidic 7-14 is basic

7 pH scale Each number on the scale is 10X as concentrated as the number before it

8 Quiz Which is more acidic? Which is more basic?
pH 2 or pH 6 pH 5 or pH 7 Which is more basic? pH 8 or pH 9 pH 10 or pH 8 How much more concentrated is pH 5 than pH 6? How much more concentrated is pH 14 than pH 12?
