3 Why Exercise? Regular exercise improves health and wellbeing and helps people avoid some health problems, such as obesity

4 The Facts In 2008, 16.8% of boys aged 2 to 15, and 15.2% of girls were classed as obese, an increase from 11.1% and 12.2% respectively in 1995. In 2008, almost a quarter of adults (24% of men and 25% of women aged 16 or over) in England were classified as obese (BMI 30kg/m2 or over). Source: NHS, 2010

6 Exercise also helps avoid heart disease, and can relieve stress and tension. The chances of health problems are greater in people who do not exercise

7 Key Definitions Exercise = A form of physical activity done to maintain or improve health and/or physical fitness. Exercise is not competitive sport. Fitness = The ability to meet the demands of the environment Health = A state of complete mental, physical and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity Performance = How well a task is completed

You can increase your fitness levels by exercising regularly, which will in turn enhance your performance. Performance can be affected by your health and fitness.
