15 NetApp Management Basics
Title Month Year NetApp Management Basics System Manager 2.0 Replaces System Manager 1.0 FilerView goes away Provides trending and historical reporting Web based No charge Element Manager Must use for low-level C-Mode cluster management 3 New CLIs in C-Mode Completely new Syntax Old CLI scripts won’t work in C-Mode Customers unable to leverage institutional knowledge NetApp has made changes to their management systems for ONTAP 8.1. One of the biggest changes is the retirement of the FilerView GUI. Replacing it is a new browser-based version of System Manager, System Manager 2.0. (System Manager 1.0 was a native Windows application). System Manager 2.0 can manage most day to day operations of ONTAP 8.1 in either 7-Mode or C-Mode. The same cannot be said for the C-Mode CLIs. There are now THREE different command line interfaces, and they have virtually nothing in common with the 7-Mode CLI. These new interfaces use a hierarchical structure, similar to what you’d find on a network router, and have a radically different syntax compared to any previous NetApp CLI. Customers making the switch to C-Mode cannot rely on previous experience; instead they must learn a completely new “language” to be productive. 15

17 HP VirtualSystem and CloudSystem
Components and Comparison

18 What is HP VirtualSystem?

20 What is HP CloudSystem? HP CloudSystem combines servers, storage, networking, and security together (Similar to VirtualSystem with IaaS/Cloud focus) CloudSystem includes three offerings: HP CloudSystem Matrix HP CloudSystem Enterprise HP CloudSystem Service Provider

21 HP CloudSystem Solutions
CloudSystem Matrix Entry cloud solution for customers who want to set up their own private cloud Comprised of three-layer structure includes supply, delivery, and demand layers Supply layer: The infrastructure services based around HP BladeSystem technology with the Matrix Operating Environment (Matrix OE). Delivery and demand layers: Service delivery and mechanism for service consumption Customers can use HP CloudStart, a service offering that allows them to be delivering private cloud services within 30 days based on a CloudSystem Matrix implementation CloudSystem Enterprise Similar to CloudSystem Matrix, CloudSystem Enterprise employs the three-layer architecture, with supply, delivery, and demand layers Dependent upon HP technology for automation and service delivery Cloud Service Automation HP Cloud Maps HP Universal Configuration Management Database (UCMDB) HP Database and Middleware Automation (DMA) Delivery layer and demand layer leverage Cloud Service Automation software supporting application delivery and portal services CloudSystem Service Provider Employs the three-layer architecture, with supply, delivery, and demand layers similar to other CloudSystem offerings Uses HP AP4SaaS to support applications delivery (SaaS and hosted services) Service Provider offering includes An administrative portal to be used by SP for offering definition Self-service portal with tools for monitoring capacity and power usage, and provision Position VCE Vblock solutions for Service Provider Opportunities

22 HP 3PAR Logical Architecture

23 HP 3PAR What they claim and position The reality… and how to counter
Adaptive Optimization delivers tiering capabilities Adaptive Optimization is ineffective and complex to implement/support Capacity/power/cooling savings via thin provisioning Thin Provisioning is designed to optimize capacity not performance Few spindles with initial configuration will lead to performance issues 16KB-sized Chuncklet creates additional metadata Scalable multi-node reliability & performance Cache in two-node configuration is non-persistant, needs 4 nodes to maintain cache coherency in event of node failure Replication easy to understand Limited to simple small-scale topology Replication steals cycles from I/O Only one pair does replication work Designed for multi-tenancy Does not provide QoS for storage resources. HP 3Par Virtual Domains do not isolate tenant application performance

24 HP Auto-tiering Capabilities-
Tiering not integral to 3PAR design – expensive & ineffective Adaptive Optimization not especially adaptive or optimizing AO with 1000 volumes increased response time to 6.5 seconds 3 hour update interval & 128MB extents Dependence on external server for stats and optimization process AO will most likely not be included in F-Class configuration due to internal bandwidth constraints Four drive magazine architecture rigid and expensive Must add by 1 mag/shelf (4 min) of same type/capacity even if SSD Narrow path between imbalance and over provisioning 3PAR software priced per drive not frame AO Metadata requires database (Oracle) on external server Creates single point of failure Position FAST VP capabilities FAST VP offers 1GB granularity to optimize performance while minimizing metadata impact Be sure to use FAST Suite. FAST Cache quickly optimizes extended cache placement to a granularity of 64KB. The rest of FAST Suite optimizes the use of near-line storage with a granularity of 1GB to minimize auto-tiering’s metadata impact. It’s also important to point out that 3PAR drives are located in magazines each containing 4 drives. These magazines must be added 4 (16 drives) per node pair and must contain the same type and size of drives. This can get very expensive in the case of Flash especially as software licensing is even more expensive. Also when a drive fails, the entire magazine must be evacuated of data before it can be changed out. This is very inconvenient on a utilized production system. Auto-tiering is our advantage especially when it involves Flash. Not only do we get more out of the flash drives used, but because 3PAR software is priced by the number and type of drive used, flash drastically increases their software price.

25 EMC VSPEX vs. HP VirtualSystem / CloudSystem

27 EMC Unified Management
Common experience for file and block Advanced and performance optimized user interface capabilities VMware integration Built-in access to support community Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. Unisphere is a new approach to storage management. It’s ease-to-use and sleek interface provides a simple integrated management experience for CLARiiON and Celerra systems. It is extensible and supports other midtier products such as EMC RecoverPoint/SE and will support more in future releases. Log on to Unisphere once and it will discover all the CLARiiONs and Celerras in the environment. Unisphere offers built-in contextual access to the support ecosystem and is your single portal for all the support and service needs. To leverage all these benefits, you don’t need to make any radical changes to your existing infrastructure. Unisphere can be seamlessly added to your current environment. Next, let’s take a closer look at each of these capabilities.

28 EMC Storage Integrator (ESI) Application-level Provisioning
Storage Provisioning for Windows Servers Application aware Storage Provisioning SharePoint Support Windows MMC based Agent-less architecture Scriptable via PowerShell Hyper-V Support ESI is a tool targeted at the Windows and MS Applications administrators. It is an MMC based management tool. ESI provides the ability to provision storage for Windows (block and file), Hyper-V and SharePoint environments with support for other applications in future releases. It supports EMC VMAX, VMAXe, VNX, VNXe and CX4 platforms. Most importantly, ESI has an agentless architecture. ESI for Windows provides storage viewing and provisioning capabilities. As part of the viewing capability, it displays Windows to Storage resource mapping. In addition, as part of Storage provisioning, ESI simplifies the steps of creating a LUN, preparing the LUN through the steps of partitioning, and formatting and creation of a Drive Letter. ESI also includes a wizard for creating a File Share and to mount the share to a Windows environment. In V1.3, ESI adds support for Hyper-V and Powershell commandlets and adds new enhancements for existing SharePoint support. Microsoft Exchange and SQL support will be supported in the future, as will support for VMware. Easy to use MMC Snap-ins for the Server/Application Admin

29 SharePoint Provisioning
Users can choose between two scenarios: Create database and web application or create a database alone. Users can select any SQL server that is part of the farm and any instance in that server. Creating a web application is only allowed for local farm. Open and browse local or remote SharePoint farm. Provision SharePoint Web Application: Create disks Create content database Create Web Application and attach the content database. Create content database but not Web Application Web Application can be created later using SharePoint admin and the database created in ESI Enable FILESTREAM RBS provider For database-only scenario For database and Web Application scenario EMC Storage Integrator for SharePoint provides storage viewing and provisioning capabilities. As part of the viewing capability, ESI discovers a SharePoint Farm, site and content databases. SharePoint Server 2010 is an application that is built on the SQL Server database engine to store its content. Most content and settings in SharePoint Server 2010 are stored in relational databases. ESI will map these resources to the underlying storage resources. Furthermore, the Storage provisioning capability will unmask the LUN for the SharePoint server, rescan the SCSI bus of the server, prepare (partition/Format/Drive letter) the LUN and provision the SharePoint site. With V1.3, ESI supports SharePoint File Stream Remote Blob Store configuration (RBS). RBS is a Microsoft SQL Server library API set that is incorporated as an add-on feature pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008 or Microsoft SQL Server R2 Express. The RBS feature enables the SharePoint Foundation 2010, to store BLOBs in a location outside the content databases. Storing the BLOBs externally can reduce how much SQL Server database storage space is required. The metadata for each BLOB is stored in the SQL Server database and the BLOB is stored in the RBS store. The SQL FILESTREAM provider enables storage of and efficient access to BLOB data by using a combination of SQL Server 2008 Express and the NTFS file system. ESI v1.3 will provision the BLOB store.

31 Efficiency

32 VNX File Deduplication and Compression
Capacity Savings Intelligent data selection Typically avoids active data Option to target active files Compression support for VMs through the Celerra Plug-in for VMware End-user file-level activation Tunable options by file system Size of files Age of files File extension Directory filtering Traditional file data 1 TB Active data ~100 GB Inactive or aged data or specifically targeted data ~900 GB Active data ~100 GB Up to 500 GB savings Dedupe and compressed data ~400 GB Internal policy engine Runs in the background Throttles to avoid negative impact on client services In addition to compression at the Block LUN level, EMC also offers file level deduplication and compression. When using VNX for File, it is recommended to use this File level feature due to the limited overhead and file level applicability of file level dedupe and compression. In this case, all deduplication processing is done on the VNX X-Blade. VNX for File performs all deduplication processing as a background, asynchronous operation that acts on file data after it has been written into the file system. It does not process active data or data as it is written into the file system. It avoids active data because active data is more likely to be accessed, modified, or deleted in a short time period. Inactive data, which represents the largest component of your datasets, roughly 80 percent, is targeted for the deduplication processes. The system is designed to process only those files that are not being actively used by clients; thereby both maximizing the space savings and minimizing the impact on end users and applications. By default, the system selects files based on their size (minimum and maximum), and age (access and modification time). The Administrator can tune these selection criteria if desired and optionally add filters to exclude specific file types (by extension) and/or files in directories with specific names. By running all the processing in the background and by avoiding processing active files, introducing a performance penalty on the data with which you are running your business is avoided. Deduplication activity is also throttled to avoid impact on processes serving client I/Os. When running on an X-Blade, deduplication will process one file system at a time and throttle its activity if the X-Blade CPU utilization exceeds 75 percent. This means that VNX File deduplication and compression will process the bulk of the data in a file system in the background without impacting the production workload by using otherwise idle CPU cycles. Once candidate files have been identified for deduplication, two activities take place: Compression: Compression is accomplished by using components similar to those used in VNX for block LUN compression Deduplication: File-level deduplication or single instancing is accomplished by using components of the EMC Avamar duplicate file identification algorithms (file identification for single instance is accomplished using a hashing algorithm from Avamar) Now let’s look at the capacity savings resulting from the deduplication process. Looking at a 1 TB traditional file system… (Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.) Based on the intelligent data selection, the deduplication engine avoids active data (the parameter for deciding what is active or inactive data is user settable) and processes all inactive or aged data. This represents approximately 80 percent of the data. (Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.) Of the 800 GB, the savings resulting from the compression activity is 290 GB, and from the single instance 80 GB—leaving 430 GB of the original 800 GB. (Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.) 430 GB plus the 200 GB of active data represents 63 percent of the original 1 TB capacity. The savings from the deduplication activity represents approximately 37 percent capacity savings, not atypical for a general NAS environment. Individual (active) files on VNX can be targeted for Compression and deduplication via the standard CIFS compression facility in Windows or via the EMC VSI Plug-in (for NFS connected data stores) for VMware. Note to Presenter: For more information on Deduplication and compression, see the legacy Celerra deduplication presentation on PowerLink. File-level deduplication- enabled file system ~ 500 GB Leverages EMC technologies Compression engine Deduplication engine Up to 50% savings

45 EMC VSPEX Cooperative Support Agreement
This example shows the Process only if the customer calls EMC first *. EMC has 650+ CSA partners. Technology Alliances and Escalation Agreements to Resolve Software/Hardware Customer issues. Example shows the flow of a customer’s VSPEX issue through the CSA process. Customer calls EMC – this may occur because EMC is the anchor product and is the name on the cabinet. It may be an EMC issue which if it is then it will get logged into EMC’s Global Technical Support system and a Service Request number will be assigned. EMC will only be responsible for EMC products. If the EMC GTS person triages the issue then EMC can point the customer to the correct vendor , either with a warm transfer (staying online with the customer ) or by directing the customer to call the vendor identified as being at fault. If the Customer calls the vendor after EMC then the customer may ask that EMC be conferenced in to assist in troubleshooting and helping communicate the issue. EMC has a CSA with over 650 members. Together EMC and the Vendor at fault work to isolate/fix the issue. If the issue needs co-development the two parties will escalate it to the appropriate channels. Once resolved the customer will be informed and any related service request tickets will be closed. * EMC is not the first vendor responsible – this is a sample only to illustrate the process
