1 Do Now Nancy earns $180 in 20 hours. What is her unit rate of her earnings? William can pack 60 toys in 4 hours. What is his unit rate with which he packs toys? There are 90 students in 3 classes. What is the unit rate of students per class? 10 minutes - 3 minutes for the students and 7 minutes to review how the students solved the problems.

2 Review A ratio is the comparison of two numbers or measures that have the same unit. Ratio of girls to boys in a class 16 girls to 15 boys Ratio of wins to losses for Pelicans 34 wins to 48 losses 5 minutes Have students provide examples of ratios

3 Review A Rate is a ratio between two quantities of different units.
110 miles in 2 hours Travel 240 miles on 15 gallons of gas 5 minutes Have students provide examples of rate

4 Review Unit rate is the ratio of two measurements in which the denominator is 1. When two ratios are equal, it is called a proportion. You solve for a unit rate by setting up a proportion in which the denominator is 1 and solving for the unknown. 110 miles in 2 hours – How many miles traveled in 1 hour? 110 miles / 2 hours = T miles / 1 hour Solve for the unknown – T Miles traveled in 1 hour Cross multiple 110 X 1 = T X 2 110 = 2T 110 / 2 = 2T / 2 55 = T 55 miles traveled in 1 hour 10 minutes – With examples the students provided calculate as a group the unit rate.

5 Lesson Objective – Compute unit rate of fractions for ratios of lengths, areas, time, and other quantities measured in like and different units with 80% or greater accuracy. How does the objective relate to our review of ratio, rate, and unit rate? 10 minutes – Have a student read the objective. Then have other students provide the objective in their own words – Use Think-Pair-Share. Have the students Answer the question – Use Think-Pair-Share.

6 Compute unit rate of fractions
Lesson Compute unit rate of fractions Step 1 – Identify the two items. Step 2 – Set up a proportion where your identified two items equals and unknown in the numerator and a 1 in the denominator. Step 3 – Solve for the unknown. Step 4 – Write out answer in simplest form using the correct units. Sophia used 1/3 of an ounce of cheese to make 1/12 of a pound of pizza dough. How many ounces of cheese are needed to make a pound of pizza dough? Model

7 Guided Practice 1) Jackson eats 1/4 part of a banana in 1/2 minute. How much time he will need to eat full banana? 10 minutes total for Guided Practice

8 Guided Practice 2) Mike ran 1/2 mile in each 1/7 of an hour; compute the unit rate (miles per hour) as the complex fraction.

9 Guided Practice 3) Mary made 1/5 of a batch of cookies in 1/10 of an hour. How many batches of cookies can she make in one hour?

10 Independent Practice You will have no more than 30 minutes to work on your independent practice. Independent practice work is to be done quietly or with 6 in voice if you need to work with a partner. We will review answers as you are working the problems. 30 minutes

14 Exit Ticket Addison plays 1/2 of a song in 1/8 of a minute. How many minutes will he need to play a full song? Joey fills 1/5 of a toffee box in 1/25 of a minute. How much time will he take to fill a toffee box? Claire power walks 1/9 of a mile in 1/54 of an hour. Compute the unit rate as the complex fraction. 3 minutes
