1 An Introduction to PPIR
Christine Kanellakis, Implementing PPIR Project Director This slide set was presented to the a specialist engineering group (Biomedical Engineers) in Melbourne. A video of presentation and the following Q&A session is also available. The annotation of this slide set is provided in order to assist other members of the PPIR Project teams who need to prepare presentations, especially for similar specialist groups representing a single industry sector or engineering discipline.

2 What is the Warren Centre for Advanced Engineering?
Self-funding, non-profit, independent, industry-linked institute Based at the University of Sydney Fostering excellence & innovation in engineering Projects on issues of national significance Around 6 or 7 years ago, we were approached by the Warren Centre to be a sponsor for the PPIR project. The Warren Centre is essentially an industry funded think tank which addresses issues of importance to the Australian engineering professions and industry Click In 2004 they started the project Professional Performance Innovation and Risk – or PPIR. They set up a project team of leading engineers, many retired senior managers and held workshops and discussions with a wide range of engineers. They carried out a detailed review of professional performance innovation and risk in the Australian engineering practice Focussing in particular on what constitutes performance for the professional engineer So how does the PPIR Protocol add to the professionalism of engineers

5 Why Do We Need PPIR? “A common underlying theme is that there is no shared and accepted view within the engineering profession, and between buyers and sellers of engineering, of the engineering perspective that should govern the relationships between the parties to an engineering task and of the professional engineer’s duty and standard of care in that task.”

6 I guess I should have defined the job a bit better
The engineer told me he’d done one of these before. We actually would have preferred a tunnel

7 What is at the core of PPIR?
Engineering profession already has Ethics and Competency standards Ethics Competency

8 Ethics

9 Competency Demonstrated when judged by one’s peers to be eligible for registration by: National Engineering Registration Board (and in Queensland by Board of Professional Engineers QLD) Elements of Competency Knowledge and skill Engineering application ability Professional and personal attributes

10 What is at the core of PPIR?
Engineering profession already has Ethics and Competency standards The PPIR Protocol defines “professional performance” in engineering Ethics Competency Performance Performance : “How does the professional engineer approach, arrange and undertake a new task to ensure delivery of the final agreed outcome”

11 The PPIR Performance Protocol
The eight elements of The PPIR Performance Protocol

12 What is our plan for PPIR?
Benefits Integrated Change Program PPIR Protocol AS.PPIR Guide to Contracting Risk Framework Improving Liability Framework Defines role, obligations and “duty and standard of care” “Best practice template” A formal, fully integrated “best for risk management” approach Including approach to expert witnesses

13 The PPIR Protocol offers
Employees & employers: A guide on how to perform tasks professionally Clear definition of individual and team expectations & responsibilities Greater confidence in future assessment of professional judgment A complement to top/down corporate processes More effective & productive employees & higher standards of commercial decision making

14 PPIR Protocol & Change Plan offers
Buyers: Best for project/ product philosophy Mechanism for measuring performance of contractors Better risk management More confidence in innovation Suppliers: Emphasis on defining the task not on remedies More balance & equity – a level playing field Better risk management allowing for innovation & improved insurance profile

15 PPIR Protocol & Change Plan Offers
The Engineering Profession: Greater understanding by the public of the profession of engineering Greater recognition of the engineer Increased status of engineering

16 Implementing PPIR TWC BOARD Steering Committee Management Committee
The project has a management structure Click And individual project teams Communication Education & Training Industry Adoption Standards Liability 16

17 The implementation of PPIR is not being mandated by law or direction from any authority So it is highly dependent on communication to generate exposure, understanding and support for the project. It uses a wide variety of media Click A website which provides access to all project information Our LinkedIn group for keeping updated on development and participating in discussion Publication of articles in magazines and on-line sites Conferences – such as this one And in seminars being run in cooperation with the associations. 17

18 A Project about Engineering Professionalism in the 21st Century
The PPIR report Winner of the NSW Engineers Australia Engineering Excellence Award 2010 A Project about Engineering Professionalism in the 21st Century
