2 What is Gifted and Talented Education?
In 1961, the California Legislature established the Mentally Gifted Minor (MGM) program for students scoring in the 98th percentile or above on standardized intellectual ability tests. By 1980 California established the GATE program allowing districts to set their own criteria for entrance. In 2000, Ed. Code requiring that GATE programs be planned and organized as differentiated learning experiences within the regular school day.

Gifted Learner Asks the questions Has wild, silly ideas Plays around, yet tests well Shows strong feeling and opinion Prefers adults Creates new design Is highly self-critical

7 Rowland Unified School District GATE Program
Rigorous Academic Focus Language Arts Math Social Studies Science Technology Enrichment Activities Fieldtrips Helen: While there are many areas of giftedness, Rowland’s GATE program has an academic focus. Enrichment activities are provided at the district level. 95% of the GATE program takes place in the classroom via differentiated instruction. Only 5% takes place at the district level.

Grades K-3: Watch Grades 4-6: Cluster Grades 7-8: International, thematic approach to learning across all subject areas. Grades 9-12: Honors, Advance Placement, and International Baccalaureate Courses. Helen: While there are many areas of giftedness, Rowland’s GATE program has an academic focus. 11 GATE Program Requirements
Curriculum Participate in district/school fieldtrips Complete three in-class GATE products per year Product #1 October 1 – December 6 Product #2 January 7 – March 7 Product #3 April 1 - May 23 Product Contracts Liz GATE students are expected to participate in district fieldtrips GATE students must complete three pre-approved GATE products per year A student contract must be executed for each product. Contract must be signed by student, parent, and teacher. *Failure to meet GATE program requirements results in student being identified as non-performing GATE student which voids eligibility for honor classes in junior high and high school.

English/Language Arts/Technology History/Social Studies/Geography Science/Math These are not additional assignments

13 Student Products Student’s highest level of productivity is reflected in the complexity and thinking level of the final product. Should be creative and multi-dimensional and reflective of differentiated classroom instruction. Student should feel the product represents his/her “best” classroom work

Forum for parents of GATE students School and district level sharing of ideas regarding the GATE program This committee is in charge of planning, evaluating, and recommending. GATE parent evaluation WE NEED TWO PARENTS TO REPRESENT YBARRA ACADEMY
