GRADUATION AND RETENTION RATES PEER AND BENCHMARK GROUP COMPARISONS UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT M}NOA FALL 1990 TO FALL 1998 COHORTS as of 1999 Institutional Research Office University of Hawai‘i November 2000 File Reference: Management and Planning Support Folder, Students Reports available online at: TABLE 3 UH Manoa Comparisons with Institutional Members of the Consortium for Student Retention Data Exchange (CSRDE) SIX-YEAR GRADUATION RATES OF FIRST-TIME FRESHMEN FALL 1990 TO FALL 1993 COHORTS 1/ Control totals reflect on cohorts; 1990 and 1991 cohort data not available. 2/ Caution should be used in comparing these percentages. UH Manoa reports "Mixed" category which is not used by other institutions. 3/ Retention and graduation rate data for UH Manoa are not reliable due to small cohort size, so are not being provided. Note: Selectivity is defined by average composite SAT scores, as shown in the table. Sources: " CSRDE Report: Retention & Graduation Rates of Entering Freshman Cohorts in 269 U.S. Colleges and Universities," May 1999; " CSRDE Report: Retention & Graduation Rates of Entering Freshmen Cohorts in 294 Colleges and Universities," May, 2000. GRADUATION AND RETENTION RATES PEER AND BENCHMARK GROUP COMPARISONS UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT M}NOA FALL 1990 to FALL 1998, as of 1999 This report summarizes data provided through the Consortium for Student Retention Data Exchange (CSRDE) and compares graduation and retention rates at the University of Hawai‘i at M~noa with rates at its peer and benchmark institutions, and consortium institutions. It is coordinated by the Center for Institutional Data Exchange and Analysis (C-IDEA) at the College of Continuing Education, University of Oklahoma. Consortium members provide graduation and retention rates, which entitles them to an annual report which can be used as a reference guide for benchmarking. Each consortium member is also entitled to an individualized report consisting of self-identified peers. Using data from CSRDE, this report looks at three rates CSRDE: ! Retention/Continuation Rate: The percentage of first-time freshmen in a given Fall semester who returned to the institution in a subsequent fall semester. ! Graduation Rate: The cumulative percentage of first-time freshmen in a given Fall semester who graduated within a designated period of time, measured as of the summer term. ! Success Rate: The percentage of first-time freshmen in a given Fall semester who have either graduated or are still enrolled. The success rate is calculated by adding the graduation and retention rates together. Using these three rates, the University of Hawai‘i at M~noa is compared with its benchmark and peer group institutions, and against the 294 CSRDE member institutions who provided data for the CSRDE report. Appendix 1 shows which schools are included in M~noa’s peer and benchmark groups, as well as graduation, retention, and success rate data for their Fall 1993 cohort. All data in this report exclude two peer groups institutions, Oregon State University and the University of Utah, which are not CSRDE members. Due to differing methodologies and databases, the data reported here differ from previously reported data from the NCHEMS/University of Hawai‘i Longitudinal Database Project. A MAPS report is a document consisting of: a cover sheet, tables with selected information, illustrative charts, and often a written summary and / or analysis.

4 There are currently over 90 reports in the MAPS report series, divided into nine groups.

11 Department of Education Private High Schools Student and Course Data
Student Registration Systems Department of Education Private High Schools Student and Course Data UH Office of Human Resources UH Central Accounting Federal and State Sources - IPEDS - DBED&T The data that goes into the MAPS reports comes from a variety of sources: Data on students and courses are taken from the Student Registration System for each campus through a series of extracts and data processing routines. Data on public high school graduates is obtained from the Hawaii Department of Education. And directly from private high schools via an annual questionnaire. Enrollment projections are forecast by the UH IRO staff using student and course data. Faculty and staff data are obtained from the UH Office of Human Resources. Revenue and expenditure data are provided by the UH Central Accounting. Other data are obtained from Federal and State sources, such as IPEDS and DBED&T.

12 In cooperation with UH Information Technology Services, the UH campuses and other offices, UH IRO works to ensure that data are reliable, accurate, and timely.

13 U The UH Institutional Research Office staff processes these data from the different sources, makes adjustments as needed, and produces finished reports that are more intelligible and easier to use.

14 To make a MAPS report: Raw data are first extracted from a data system (such as student registration). Data are then compiled, printed, and verified.

15 Reports are then distributed.

19 Grant proposals Presentation visuals Program review
MAPS report recipients use the data for a variety of purposes, including: Supporting data for grant proposals Data points for presentation visuals Faculty and student information for program review Information for departmental self-study And accreditation. Self study Accreditation

20 ? Of course, the report series does not address every information need, But does provide answers to fundamental questions as well as a baseline on a variety of statistical measures.

21 1987 1991 1999 2001 The historical archive goes back many years, providing a longitudinal data base useful for time series analysis.

22 The approach of the UH IRO team has been to make available through the MAPS reports a historical database of high quality information, for use by the University community, State and Federal government offices, and the general public.

23 The MAPS reports have evolved over time in response to end-user feedback.
