El Imperfecto

2 What is it? The imperfect is one of many past tenses in Spanish.
It is one of the tenses that you will be expected to use in your exams in order to achieve a C or above. It is also one of the easiest tenses to form in Spanish (you’ll be happy to know).

3 When is it used? The imperfect tense is used to describe ongoing actions in the past, things that happened over a long period of time – I went on holiday to Spain every year. It is used when describing events/things in the past – it was hot/she was nice. It is used to describe a habitual action in the past – I used to walk to school.

7 Irregulars Luckily for you there are only 3 irregular verbs in the imperfect tense. However, they are 3 of the most important verbs so make sure that you learn them. IR SER VER To go To be To watch/see Iba era veía Ibas eras veías Iba éramos veíamos Íbamos erais veíais Ibais eran veían

8 La Práctica Coger – to catch Empezar – to start Trabajar – to work
Charlar – to chat Comer – to eat Haber – to be (exist) Volver – to return Terminar – to finish Conocer – to know Tener – to have Soler + infinitive – to usually Levantarse – to get up Acostarse – to go to bed Necesitar – to need Pasar – to spend time Copy the vocab and then change it into the 1st person imperfect. Ejemplo: coger-to catch-cogía EXTRA: Write 5 sentences using one of these verbs in the imperfect tense.

9 ¿Qué tal? How confident do you feel about the imperfect tense?
Write one of the following statements in your books: I feel confident using the imperfect tense in my own work. I feel confident recognising the imperfect tense in Spanish texts and speech. I do not yet understand the imperfect tense.
