2 What was the Dust Bowl? -A series of severe winds and droughts -High erosion -Impossible to farm - “Black Blizzards” - Dust storms & static electricity

3 When was the Dust Bowl? -During the 1930’s - “The Dirty Thirties” -Simultaneously going on with the Great Depression (1929- 1939).

4 Where was the Dust Bowl? -Across American and Canadian prairies.

5 Why did the Dust Bowl happen? -Terrible timing (worst ten years of weather) -New innovations in farming led to over farming of the prairies.

6 Who was affected? -Over 100,000 farming families migrated to California. -Most stayed back -Teacher, lawyers, and doctors moved as well.

7 What happened? -Many people migrated to California. -Approximately 500 people died of dust pneumonia; others died from malnutrition. Some people suffocated because of the dust storms.

8 What happened? -FDR’s New Deal -Paid farmers to not farm -Paid farmers to try new soil conservation techniques -Bought 140 million acres to be federally protected
