2 What is the Dust* Bowl? an area where a series of dust storms took place from 1931 to 1936 (in some areas until 1940) major ecological and agricultural damage resulted from these storms caused by hot weather without any rain coupled with extensive farming for a long time  the ground dried out, became dust and blew away over the land in large black clouds because of the unusual high winds in this area * dust: fine powder that consists of fine pieces of sand

4 1931 intensive drought* hit the mid-western and southern plains the “black blizzards” began * drought: long period of time when there is little or no rain

9 1939 the rain came  ended the drought during the next few years, the plains once again became golden with wheat
