Lesson 3.5 – Electric Circuits

1. An electrical circuit provides a path for electrons to flow through devices that need electricity to work.

2. All circuits consist of at least three things a. A power source such as a battery that provides electrons. A B C

b. A device that needs electricity to operate such as a light bulb, speaker, or motor called a resistor. c. Wires that connect the parts of the circuit together. A B C

3. An electric circuit must form a closed loop so that electrons that leave the power source eventually return to it.

4. Electrons flow out of the negative end of the power supply, through the circuit and into the positive end of the power supply. ABC

5. Series Circuits = components of the circuit are connected along a single path a. As resistor are added the amount of electrons available to all the others b. If one resistor breaks, the others decreases will not work

6. Parallel Circuits = each component is connected to the power source. a. As resistors are added, amount of electrons available b. If one resistor breaks, the others will stays the same continue to work

WORK WITH US…NOT AHEAD OF US!

1.) Build your own electrical circuit using the following items? wire light bulb battery

2. A student is designing a circuit. He wants to combine three components but wants to make sure that if one of the components stops working the other two will continue to work. Which type of circuit would he design? He should use a parallel circuit because each device is directly connected to the power supply so if one breaks the others will continue to work.

Do you know what that means?

(5 Questions)

1. Which of these is NOT required in a circuit? A. Wire B. Switch C. Power Source D. Resistor

2. Would the device powered by the circuit at the right function? A. Yes, there is wire, a power supply, and a resistor. B. Yes, because it is a series circuit. C. No, because it does not form a closed loop. D. No, because it does not contain a power supply.

3. Would the device powered by the circuit at the right function? A. Yes, there is wire, a power supply, and a resistor. B. Yes, because it is a series circuit. C. No, because it does not form a closed loop. D. No, because it does not contain a power supply.

4. Which type of circuit is shown below?

5. Which of these describes the circuit at the right if R1 is broken? R2 R3 A. A parallel circuit; R2 and R3 will not function. B. A parallel circuit; R2 and R3 will function. C. A series circuit; R2 and R3 will not function. D. A series circuit; R2 and R3 will function. R3 R1 R2
