2 Purpose Shared understanding of the role of the National Landscape Conservation System as part of the BLM team Provide a summary of the budget history and financial strategies to manage public lands within the NLCS Identify focused investment opportunities for partners and other interested members of the community

3 Introduction The Bureau of Land Management manages 264 million acres of public lands representing a priceless legacy and long-term investment for the American people. Prized originally for their commodity value, the public lands today offer unparalleled recreation opportunities, conservation of heritage resources, and guarantees of open space in an increasingly crowded West. The BLM responded to a growing concern over the loss of open space by creating the National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) in June 2000. The NLCS is an integral part of the BLM team as it provides overall guidance and direction in the management of certain public lands.

12 Current NLCS Operations The management of all public lands is guided by the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA). This landmark statute has provided for a multiple use of public lands and given the BLM important flexibility in the management of land to meet the changing and growing needs of the region. FLPMA enables the BLM to manage the public lands for a variety of purposes. The NLCS categorizes workloads within NLCS public lands in the following groups: Natural Resources Cultural/Heritage Resources Energy & Minerals Recreation Forest & Forage Direct Community Services
