2 Denotation: the strict dictionary meaning of a word.

3 Connotation: The emotional and imaginative association surrounding a word.

4 A word can have a negative, positive, or neutral connotation.

5 Example: the word “fat” Denotation meaning: “A kind of body tissue containing stored fat that serves as a source of energy; adipose tissue also cushions and insulates vital organs.”

6 Connotation meaning: negative The word “fat” is often used to put someone down and/or to shame a person’s body.

7 Positive Connotation: We bought inexpensive souvenirs at the amusement park. Negative Connotation: We bought cheap souvenirs at the amusement park.

8 Positive Connotation: I ate a moist sandwich. Negative Connotation: I ate a soggy sandwich.

9 Positive Connotation: Her eyebrows are on fleek! Negative Connotation: He is so ratchet.

10 Sidenote: The words “fleek” and “ratchet” are slang words.
