Lab Safety MOST IMPORTANT RULE: read all directions first (listen to teacher’s directions), THEN ask teacher if unsure lab behavior (and clean up) is part of lab grade

Some lab safety rules Do not touch any equipment, supplies, or other materials without permission from your teacher. Never taste, touch, or smell chemicals unless you are directed to do so. If there’s an accident (fire, glass break, cut, etc.) tell your teacher FIRST thing! Know the location of first aid kit and fire extinguisher. NO HORSEPLAY!!

More rules Keep hands away from your face, eyes, and mouth until you are able to wash your hands after the experiment. Assume ALL chemicals are dangerous. Wear safety goggles when instructed. Keep your work space clean and neat. Follow proper disposal procedures for all chemical (many cannot be poured down the sink)

Is the proper safety procedures being followed? Gina is thirsty. She rinses a beaker with water, refills it with water, and takes a drink. Bram pours a small amount of HCl acid into a beaker after putting on his goggles. It is rather warm today, so Anna slips her shoes off and walks barefoot to the sink. ….more

While washing glassware, Mike splashes some water on Evon. To get even, Evon splashes him back. During an experiment, Lindsey decides to mix two chemicals that the lab procedure does not say to mix, because she is curious about what will happen. After sitting on a hot plate for 10 minutes, Casey picks up the beaker with her bare hands. How do you handle HOT objects?

Practice Question FIRSTZack accidentally dropped a beaker in the lab. The glass shattered and liquid covered a large area of the floor. What if the FIRST step Zack should take? –Carefully clean up the glass. –Carefully clean up the liquid –Get another beaker and start over. –Tell his teacher that an accident happened in the lab.
