3 Most people argue with their family, find them embarrassing or struggle to understand the older generation: this conflict has always been a part of my relationship with Mama and Nonna. However, as I’ve got older, I’ve realised that this conflict has strengthened my relationship with Mama, as well as challenged it. After a meeting with my father, where he basically rejected me, Mama said how ‘You’re not so tough Alibrandi. I can see through you’. By directly addressing me in this way, using ‘you’, the challenges with my father had led my mother to confront me, to look at me as an individual. When she used ‘you’, furthermore, it also symbolised how she was looking at me as an individual for the first time – as an equal. This feeling was strengthened when she used to verb ‘see’. I’ve always associated the word ‘see’ with vision, and thus I felt that through the conflict with my father Mama had finally been able to appreciate me, looking at me beyond my teenage appearance. In this way, the conflicts that were part of my adolescence actually strengthened the relationship with the person who matters to me and who has always been there: my Mama.
