Choose your size: Before you begin making any cuts of the pattern, if you are still unsure about your size, you can measure your hips and side length of your legs to check!

Understanding Pattern Symbols – Notches: – Pocket placement: ---------------- – Grainline Arrow – Place on Fold: – Shorten or lengthen here:

Length Adjustments: To shorten, you would fold the pattern at the adjustment lines however many inches you need to shorten by. To lengthen, you need to cut on those adjustment lines and add paper in- between. ***In both cases you need to adjust the pattern size lines to now match the adjustments!!***

Cutting and Marking: Cut along the size lines you highlighted on the OUTSIDE of the black lines. Your marking the black side of the pattern NOT the red. Red=STOP The only marking needed is for the back pocket, mark this with a tracing wheel and tracing paper before removing the pattern.

Preparing the Fabric : Match the selvage edges… What are the selvage edges again?! Anytime your pattern tells you to lay your piece along the grain line…it wants you to line your pattern piece parallel to the SELVAGE If you find the edges are all not lining up, you can pull on the diagonals and stretch the fabric back on the grain line.

Layout

Layout: The fabric should be folded so it is longer than it is wider (hotdog way). Notice the word “fold” and “selvage”, use this picture as a guide when your setting up your fabric! Just LAY the pattern out, don’t pin until it is on the grainline… which I will demo next…

The grainline runs LENGTHWISE on the fabric, PARALLEL to the selvage You have to measure from the grainline to the edge of the fabric…all the way down the grainline, from top to bottom. It needs to measure the same distance the whole way! Pin grainline first as you measure, and then pin the rest of the pattern piece down. If the pattern is not on the grainline…it can stretch awkwardly when sewn and the pattern of the fabric will not match nicely! ***Grainline is all about accurate fit/drape to the body and matching fabric patterns***
