NON EXHAUST TRAFFIC RELATED EMISSIONS WORKING DOCUMENTS Sustainable Transport Unit Institute for Energy and Transport Joint Research Centre 35 th PMP IG Meeting - 05 March 2015 Giorgio Martini and Theodoros Grigoratos

Different driving conditions in experimental investigation of wear particle emissions is one of the reasons why different conclusions have been reported The purpose of this WI is to provide guidance for the harmonization of future wear studies and thus improve the comparability of the results The proposed approach is to use activity data collected in the framework of other projects. Also a “region based” rather than a “harmonized” approach is to be followed WI 1: INVESTIGATION OF TYPICAL DRIVING PATTERNS AND IN PARTICULAR OF TYPICAL ACCELERATIONS/DECELERATIONS

PARAMETERS TO BE TAKEN UNDER CONSIDERATION (1) The above listed parameters already exist from previous analysis work for the European part of the database Preliminary “typical” driving behaviors can already be derived from the above listed parameters

PARAMETERS TO BE TAKEN UNDER CONSIDERATION (2) The above listed parameters could be derived from the WLTP database by Mr. Heinz Steven All parameters will be calculated in relation to the trip and short trip durations, which practically will define a typical short journey

PARAMETERS TO BE TAKEN UNDER CONSIDERATION (3) The above listed parameters have been proposed for consideration and will be presented in more detail by Mr. Jan Münchhoff

Document 2 contains information about the above listed projects Mr. Agusti Sin (ITT) will present the details of a collaborative project on brake wear WI 2: COMPILATION AND MONITORING OF ON-GOING RESEARCH PROJECTS ON NON-EXHAUST PARTICLE EMISSIONS

Pin-on-disc systems are more appropriate for studying wear mechanisms, while brake dynamometers are used for emission studies. Existing mobile units still have certain limitations There are no significant problems regarding particle collection efficiency and instruments coupling on the above enclosed systems WI 4: DEVELOPMENT OF A SET OF RECOMMENDED MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES AND SAMPLING PROCEDURES BRAKES SAMPLING PROCEDURES

Wheel simulators are used for emission studies. Cryogenic production cannot simulate real world wear emissions. Existing mobile units still have certain limitations Existing systems do not allow to distinguish among tyre and road wear particles WI 4: DEVELOPMENT OF A SET OF RECOMMENDED MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES AND SAMPLING PROCEDURES TYRES SAMPLING PROCEDURES

Existing techniques present specific limitations either concerning the density of the wear particles or the ability to measure volatile wear particles WI 4: DEVELOPMENT OF A SET OF RECOMMENDED MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES AND SAMPLING PROCEDURES MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES PARTICLE MASS

Certain limitations exist as some techniques provide approximate PN distributions, others do not measure particles in the full size range, and others do not distinguish between volatile and solid particles WI 4: DEVELOPMENT OF A SET OF RECOMMENDED MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES AND SAMPLING PROCEDURES MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES PARTICLE NUMBER
