Chapter 32 ASEPTIC TECHNIQUE AND WOUND MANAGEMENT Pauline Cardwell

Introduction This presentation walks you through the aseptic techniques required to provide a requisite level of safe care. Part 1 - Preparation of Equipment and Dressing Part 2 – Application of Gloves

PART 1: Preparation of Equipment and Dressing

Aseptic Techinque Begin by washing your hands (review the presentation for Chapter 30). Using soap and water wash entire trolley or surface. Wipe with alcohol impregnated wipe.

Preparation of Equipment Assemble all equipment, potential and required, on the clean trolley. Prepare self by removing jewellery, ensuring hair is tied back and applying a disposable apron.

Preparation for Dressing Begin by checking the packaging of all assembled equipment for expiry dates and damage. Carefully decant pack contents on to cleaned trolley, without directly handling.

PART 2: Application of Gloves

Application of Gloves Open the pack carefully, handling only the outer surface of the packaging. Ensure the gloves are accessible for application, without contaminating the dressing pack contents.

Cautiously lift the first glove slightly off the packaging by the upturned cuff and insert fingers inside the glove. Gently ‘feed’ hand into the glove further until hand is inside the glove.

Gently slip the gloved fingers under the cuff of the other glove and ‘open’ the glove to assist in slipping the hand inside the glove. Cautiously advance the hand into the glove.
