Directions: Read the following statements and decide whether you agree or disagree. On a clean sheet of paper, write your answer & give 1-2 sentence(s) explanation. StatementsAgreeDisagree People who are insane always know that they are insane. Sane people sometimes imagine that they hear things. If you commit a major crime, sooner or later you will be caught. When you’ve done something wrong, it’s agony to wonder if you’ll be caught. All people share the same fears.

Get out a sheet of paper and create “The Tell Tale Heart” notes page in the literature section of your binder. The following slides will be added to your notes page.

Creating Suspense Edgar Allan Poe creates suspense using 3 concepts: 1.Pacing 2.Dangerous Action 3.Foreshadowing

Pacing  Alliteration (Repetition of the first consonant)  Slowly, silently –From “TTH”  Repetition (Repeating words/phrases)  The highwayman came riding, riding/ The highwayman came riding up to the old inn door - From “The Highwayman

Dangerous Action  Dialogue (Conversation between characters)  Conflict (Struggle; Opposing forces)  Tom Sawyer vs Injun Joe  Muff Potter vs Injun Joe  Point of View (Who’s telling the story?)  Reliable Narrator vs. Unreliable Narrator

Foreshadowing  Clues/Hints to coming events  Surprise Ending

Active Reading: Elements of Suspense  As we read, use your post-it notes to mark elements of suspense. Make sure to write the first few words of the quote along with the page number so you can go back and find it later.  You need you will need two examples of each choice…therefore, 6 examples total!!  Choices-  Pacing (Alliteration OR Repetition)  Dangerous Action (Dialogue, Conflict, OR Point of View)  Foreshadowing

Directions: Create the chart below on the same sheet of paper as your anticipation guide. (You do not have to write the example.) Suspenseful Moment (Text Evidence with author & page #) Type of Suspense (Pacing, Dangerous Action, Foreshadowing) Explanation Example: “I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad?” (Poe 147). This type of suspense is dangerous action. The reader meets the narrator and can see that he is unreliable. In this quote, the narrator is trying to prove to the reader that he is not mad. However, this does not help in proving his sanity because he describes how he is able to hear things that are not actually there. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
