CITRIS & Berkeley Engineering: Anthony St. George Director of Development Center for IT Research in the Interest of Society Executive Director Global Learning and Outreach from Berkeley Engineering (GLOBE) UC Berkeley Elements of International Partnerships in Energy and the Environment

Berkeley Engineering’s Mission: Educating Leaders, Creating Knowledge, Serving Society Goals of an International Partnership: –Educate Globally Aware Leaders Understand Global Technology Needs, Societies, and Business Cultures Time abroad – Internships or Research –Advance Knowledge through Collaborative Research Work with research leaders with complementary expertise, top in field, (and application or test beds within partner country to apply in unique set of conditions) –Serve Society Through Socially Relevant Research Problem-driven research rather than incremental technological advancement

College of Engineering Strategic Priorities Educating Global Technology Leaders Sustainable Energy Solutions IT to Serve Society Engineering Better Health

Supply Demand

Supply ZEH/HyberBric Helios Smart Combustion Thermoelectrics Berkeley Energy Institute Batteries,Storage Green Manufacturing Demand Lo-Cal

Existing International Partnership Models: –Visiting students: Undergraduates or graduate level students come to for one semester or executive education. Funding usually supported by government, corporation or foundation. –KAUST Help establish premier graduate institution in both research and education Identify new faculty with whom to collaborate in the future Funding provided for collaboration Establish curriculum to foster multi-disciplinary education –CET - Tsinghua: Help enhance existing innovation and entrepreneurship programs Build Global Venture Lab for greater impact towards commercialization of technology

Steps to a Comprehensive Program: 1.Identify Champions 2.Map Research/Identify Projects/Create ‘Database’ 3.Develop Coordinated Funding Campaign 4.Identify and Establish Program Elements - Visiting graduate students (CSC Scholarships) - Visiting faculty/Collaborative Research - Workshops - Use of test beds and/or special equipment/technology - Seed Funding program - Internships - Virtual Teams/Competitions - Executive Education/Training on Transforming Traditional Industries - White Paper/Study on Transforming Traditional Industry in Tianjin

Questions to Consider: What is the Goal of Collaboration? What Value Can Each Partner Bring? Test Bed? Equipment? Location? Corporate Partner? What Size/Scope? What Model? Seed Funds? Integrated Projects?

Thank you
