South America – population distribution. In this lesson we will consider the population density of different countries in South America. To calculate population density: Population Area Let’s see is we can calculate the population density in Hong Kong Hong Kong population Area 7,153,512 1,104 So, on average how many people live in a km2 in Hong Kong?

CountryPopulationArea (km2)Population density Argentina41,769,7262,780,400 Bolivia10,118,6831,098,581 Brazil203,429,7788,514,877 Chile16,888,760756,102 Colombia46,266,3641,138,910 Ecquador15,007,343283,561 Falkland Islands3,14012,173 French Guiana217,00083,534 Guyana744,768214,969 Paraguay6,459,058406,752 Peru29,248,9431,285,216 Suriname491,989163,820 Uraguay3,308,535176,215 Venezuela27,635,743912,050 On your teachers wiki/weebly is an Excel spreadsheet with this table, you are going to use it to calculate the population density of all the countries in South America

Now go to your teachers weebly/wiki and play the short film on how to use excel to calculate population density.

CountryPopulationArea (km2)Population density Ecquador15,007,343283,56153 Colombia46,266,3641,138,91041 Venezuela27,635,743912,05030 Brazil203,429,7788,514,87724 Peru29,248,9431,285,21623 Chile16,888,760756,10222 Uraguay3,308,535176,21519 Paraguay6,459,058406,75216 Argentina41,769,7262,780,40015 Bolivia10,118,6831,098,5819 Guyana744,768214,9693 Suriname491,989163,8203 French Guiana217,00083,5343 Falkland Islands3,14012,1730 If your table now looks like the one above then you have cracked it! Well done!

Now it’s time to use your data to make a choropleth map. Put an example of a choropleth map here

There are some rules when drawing a choropleth map: You must select colours from the same family of colours Your colours must go from dark to light For your choropleth map the countries that are most densely populated should be the darkest, the countries that are least densely populated should be the lightest.

Now go to your teachers wiki/weebly and watch the video on how to use the internet to produce a choropleth map
