2 The Cities Brasilia, the capitol of Brazil,has a pop. Of 1,737,813. Rio de Janeiro (Rio as its popularly called) is Brazil’s most famous city, and has a population of 5,606,497 people. Sao Paulo has a pop. Of 10,017,821. Belo Horizonte has a pop. Of 2,097,311.

3 Language The principal language of Brazil is Portuguese. The other commonly used languages are Spanish, French, and English.

4 Population The population of Brazil as of 2000 is 171,853,126. There are 52 people per square mile. 79% of Brazil’s population live in the urban areas.

5 Geography The area of Brazil is 3,286,478 sq. miles. It is the largest country in South America. Its neighbors are French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, and Venezuela on the north. Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina border Brazil on the west. Uruguay neighbors the country on the south.

6 Government Brazil is a federal government. The head of state and government is President Fernando Enrique Cardoso. There are 26 states In Brazil. The only federal district is Brasilia.

7 Economy The chief crops are coffee, soybeans, sugarcane, cocoa, rice, corn, wheat, and citrus. The minerals found in Brazil are iron, manganese, phosphates, uranium, g old, nickel, tin, bauxite, and oil. The work force includes 26% agriculture, 25% in services, and 13% in manufacturing.
