Ch 10 Meiosis

Meiosis Mitosis creates 2 identical daughter cells first. Meiosis creates 4 genetically different cells with half of the original number of chromosomes (haploid) as an end product. **Meiosis occurs in the creation of gametes (sex cells) when organism is ready to reproduce**

Meiosis Homologous chromosomes have a matching chromosome from the opposite-sex parent. Example: If the mother has four chromosomes, the father has four corresponding homologous chromosomes.

Meiosis If cell has only a single set of chromosomes, it is considered to be haploid (N). If a cell has both sets of homologous chromosomes, then it is considered to be diploid (2N). Ex: Human cells are diploid, and their diploid number is 46. What is their haploid number?

Meiosis Why does meiosis cut the number of chromosomes in half? What kind of cells only need half of the chromosomes?
