2. Components of a Lesson Lesson Title : Main Idea or focus of the lesson Content Standard : What standard(s) are most relevant to the learning goals? Student Learning Goal(s)or Objective(s ):What are the specific learning goal(s) for students in this lesson? Assessmen t: how do you plan to evaluate student learning Instructional Strategies and learning tasks : how will you teach the lesson and how will the students be engaged. Differentiation : meeting the needs of all learners in the class Closure : how you close the lesson Materials : materials you will use to teach the lesson

3. Where to Start ? The greater the structure of a lesson and the more precise the directions on what is to be accomplished, the higher the achievement rate. Harry Wong, The First Days of Teaching

4. When writing your lesson plans or units consider this… “To begin with the end in mind means to start with a clear understanding of your destination. It means you know where you’re going…so the steps you take are always in the right direction.” (Wiggins and McTighe) Teachers are encouraged to begin with the assessment. Once you know how you will assess student understanding, then you can plan instructional strategies to teach the content of the standard.

5. Learning goals or targets Statements of what we want students to learn and be able to do. These statements come from the Common Core State Standards! https://www. georgiastandards.org/https://www. georgiastandards.org/ Can be in the form of an Essential Question (EQ) or I“I can” statement. Decide what part of the content stand will be the focus of the lesson. You cannot teach one complete standard in one lesson.

7. Learning goals or targets should: Be posted daily for students to see Be discussed with students at the beginning of the lesson Be reviewed with students at the end of the lesson How do you know students reached the target? (formative & summative assessment)

9. Introduction to the lesson (Grab their attention or Hook) The beginning of the lesson – the place where you draw the student into your lesson. It can provide a sense of direction and purpose for the learning. Teachers can use video clips, skits, visuals, stories, or objects to get the interest or hook the student. Be creative!

10. Activating Prior Knowledge Background knowledge is what a person already knows. The relationship between students’ background knowledge and their achievement is strong; it provides the platform, the schema, and vocabulary needed for success. (Zull, 2002) What do my student know about the learning goal? How can you find out?

11. Instructional strategies and learning task How will you teach the content? Use a variety of strategies to keep student engaged in the lesson. Model the learning. Check for understanding: ask questions throughout the lesson to check for student's understanding of the content. Not just recall questions, plan some higher order critical thinking questions as well. What opportunities will you give the students to practice new learning and to demonstrate their understanding. What types of feedback will you give students?

13. Differentiation What do I need to do to scaffold instruction for those who are below level? How do I meet the needs of the student who may already have the skill? Use your Context for Learning to plan for all learners. Remember that not everyone in your class is “on level” or at the “same level” of learning. What are your plans to support student learning?

14. Closure of lesson Lesson Wrap-up: Leave students with an imprint of what the lesson covered. Ask students to summarize the major concepts Revisit the EQ or I can statement, recap the main points Set the stage for the next phase of learning.

15. Materials for Lesson Plan! Prepare! Have on hand! Gather materials before the lesson begins and put in a place easy to reach. Remember Murphy’s Law Envision your needs. List all resources. Have enough manipulatives (when needed) for groups or individuals. Precut materials if needed for small hands that struggle, time management, to keep the lesson flowing.

As a Block One student, parts of the lesson will be not be utilized based on the lesson content you will be teaching. Writing lesson plans is a learning process that takes practice and support from course instructors, university supervisors, and cooperating teachers in your field placement.
