Welcome– 10/17 Collect Lab Reports Big Bang Theory and Life Cycle of the Star Notes Nuclear Chemistry Notes HW: NONE!

Big Bang: Question 1 When did all the particles of matter form? After the first second of the Big Bang! At this point the universe was made up of neutrons, protons, and electrons.

Big Bang: Question 2 What were the first elements to form? Hydrogen and Helium, these are the simplest element.

Big Bang: Question 3 How were the elements such as oxygen, nitrogen, and iron distributed into space? During supernova explosions.

http://education- portal.com/academy/lesson/evidence-for-the- big-bang-theory-background-radiation-red- shift-and-expansion.html

Big Bang Evidence: Question 1 How would scientists describe what happened in the big bang? It was like a balloon being blown up

Big Bang Evidence: Question 2 What evidence supports the big bang theory? The universe is expanding. Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation The abundance of elements in the universe

Big Bang Evidence: Question 3 How were the elements in the universe created? Hydrogen and helium were formed in the big bang. Heavier elements were formed inside stars

Big Bang Evidence: Question 4 How do the amounts of heavier elements support the big bang? Based on the timeline of the big bang, scientist can predict the amounts of each element in the universe. Observations prove these predicted amounts to be correct.

http://education- portal.com/academy/lesson/star-formation- main-sequence-dwarf-giant-stars.html

Star Formation: Question 1 What is nuclear fusion that occurs in the early stages of a star’s life? When hydrogen atoms fuse together to form helium atoms.

Star Formation: Question 2 What happens to a star when hydrogen fusion occurs? Energy is released.

Star Formation: Question 3 What determines how long a star lives? The mass of the star. The bigger the star the more quickly it will use up the hydrogen in its core.

Star Formation: Question 4 What stage of a star’s life forms carbon and helium? How does this happen? When the star is a Red Giant/Red Super Giant. This happens because the star has run out of hydrogen and is large enough to form larger elements.

Nuclear Energy http://education- portal.com/academy/lesson/what-is-nuclear- energy-definition-examples.html

Nuclear Energy: Question 1 What is nuclear energy? Energy that is formed during nuclear reactions, like the energy from the sun.

Nuclear Energy: Question 2 What is a nuclear reaction? A reaction that changes the nucleus of an atom

Nuclear Energy: Question 3 What is fission? When large nuclei are split into smaller fragments.

Nuclear Energy: Question 4 What is fusion? Smaller nuclei are combine to form a larger nucleus

Nuclear Energy: Question 5 How does our sun produce energy? Nuclear fusion.

http://education- portal.com/academy/lesson/fusion-fission- carbon-dating-tracers-imaging-applications- of-nuclear-chemistry.html

Nuclear Chemistry: Question 1 What is nuclear fusion? When the nuclei of two atoms combine to form a larger atom

Nuclear Chemistry: Question 2 What is release when a fusion reaction occurs? ENERGY!!!

Nuclear Chemistry: Question 3 What is nuclear fission? When atoms break apart to form smaller atoms

Nuclear Chemistry: Question 4 What happens to carbon-14 in a dying animal? Why? It undergoes beta decay to form nitrogen atoms because carbon-14 is an unstable isotope.

Nuclear Chemistry: Question 5 How does the amount of carbon-14 in an artifact help to determine how old the fossil is? Carbon- 14 decays at a constant rate over a certain amount of time. The less carbon-14 the artifact contains, the older the artifact is.
