1 Exercise and Occupations Unit Plan Presentation David Hough

2 Unit Summary Students will play the role of interviewer and will survey a professional of which physical fitness is a requirement of their occupation (ex. firefighter, military, police officer). They will determine why physical fitness is important to them and what their specific workout routine is. Students will present to the class the findings of their interview. Students will learn principles of exercise and program design. As a group students will develop their own personal workout routine and participate in the routine for one month. Students will share their results after participating in their own workout routines. 5 Assessment Before the work begins I will use Curriculum-Framing Questions to assess the student’s knowledge going into the unit and determine anything I may need to go over prior to the unit. It will serve as a good introduction to the unit. I will again assess whether the student’s understanding of the project directions. While students work on projects I will utilize group assignments and class discussions to assess learning and student needs. Unit Questions- How can a firefighter or police officer prepare him or herself for stressful situations? How often do you think you should work out? Content Questions- What is the number one cause of death associated with firefighting? What are the principles of exercise? What is F.I.T.T? What is Karvonen’s formula? What is your Maximum heart rate? Your aerobic training rate?

7 Why Projects? With content standards and assessment at the forefront of learning With content standards and assessment at the forefront of learning we are using project approaches to engage students in authentic work and develop 21st century skills. These skills include collaboration, problem solving, and critical thinking. Project based learning can yield very high results and can be rewarding for the student and the teacher.
