The Digestive System

You will use and understand the scientific process for groups experiments Students will gain a full understanding of how the digestive and excretory system work in their own bodies

What is the first part of the digestive system? What is the second part of the digestive system. Describe to a partner how the mouth and esophagus work together to digest food.

stomach: a stretchy bag that holds your food after you eat digestive juice: liquid made by the stomach that helps in breaking down food. chime: the mixture of food and digestive juices in the stomach

Stomach Esophagus Helps to break food into smaller pieces so your body can use it for energy and nutrition

Before scientists perform and experiment they form a hypothesis ( a guess based on what we know already). A hypothesis is not always correct. They are learning tools used to guide us

Today will predict what happens to the food after it travels through the esophagus. The plastic bag will act like the stomach. It will hold: the juice will act as digestive juice

Make a prediction about what will happen to the food in the stomach. Then write it down on your recording sheet. the juice will act as digestive juice

First, place all the items bellow in the bag. Next, Gently squeeze the bag from different directions to show how the stomach works to break down food. Then, write down what you have learned/ observed on our recording sheet. Also update your digestive person

The food is mixed together and made into smaller pieces by movement of the “muscles”. This mixture is called chime

Interesting Facts Food is in your digestive system for about 24 hours

Your stomach stretches when you eat like a balloon being filled with air

Your stomach mashes your food the way a baker kneads dough for bread.
